Title: virtual what (connectix)
Post by: dc froyla on September 26, 2003, 10:28:41 pm
Is it possible to open an exe. file with virtual dos
from connectix?  Alternately I shelled out for
(very) softwindows, but the serial # that came with it
doesn't work...so I swore to never pay connectix again...
will virtual pc actually Work?  Could I use all the
fancy graphics packages I bought for windows
but just sit there unused?  Or does Connectix
just package crap? 8)

I use virtualpc to unpack .exe's all the time - but it simply doesn't have the power to run anything graphics intensive.

Rgr that re: .exe unstuffing.  Unfortunately there's not enough video ram in the emulation to provide for the PC game and thus also Igor but you could do 3dmax (sp?) the 3d editing program albeit not full throttle.

The biggest major problem with VPC is that it dosn't currently support Vidio hardware support - ie it can't make use of your graphics card...
But for unpacking .exe files.... fantastic

out of the box VPC comes only with DOS. You have to install a Windows version on it to open exe. Further you have to enter two serial numbers: one for the VPC and then another time another serial number for your Windows version.

You are correct about the two serial numbers, however - VPC comes in a variety of configurations, ranging from JUST DOS to Win XtraPoopy.  The reason for this is that you can install the real deal directly form the ORIGINAL CDs if you have them.  Even further, you can set up MULTIPLE environments...(DOS, Win2K, WinXP, Win95); and you can run tehm SIMULTANEOUSLY - if you have the RAM.  I have a Dual Processor Machine with plenty of RAM and do this with great regularity.  I am even able to run Visual Stupidio.  THERE ARE some games that don't perform well, (or run at all!) - However, I am fully able to run GR/DS/IT with no difficulty. You CAN configure the Video RAM in VPC within some limits.

Good luck to you...
