Title: Something to laugh about, and someone to laugh at
Post by: Typhy on September 14, 2003, 08:42:22 pm
So, a few minutes ago, I was trying to have a convorsation with Mainman ( it started out about how much RvS sucks ). It came into Ghost Recon, and it became like trying to discuss quantom psyics(sp) with a 3 year old.

So, Mainman claims that the only reason that games like Ghost Recon get terrible framerates on macs, is because mac graphics cards are "different", and that if we had the same graphics cards as PC's, we'd get perfect framerates.

Just thought I'd throw this in, so you could laugh at his likely response, and say:

"GHR is an unoptimized piece of shit, and one of the all time worst ports."

Corrections: conversation, quantum physics.

Well, there's a simple explanation for those idiotic ideas, the kid's like 12.

Mainman blows. It's been scientifically proven.

Yeah he isn't the brightest one out there. But who doesn't enjoy the laughter that occurs when he is arguing a point.
Btw, he claims to be 19 now  ;)

Typhy, you're just mad because the GhR ladder is more active...and because RS is an outdated, Only-Runs-In-OS9 piece of unoptimized crap.  ;)

Well, it's certainly got high-performance crashes.

Meh, RS isn't amazingly optimized. It's just never something that anyone really thinks about, sense almost everyone has about 8 times the graphics power, 4 times the processor power, and 5 times the RAM.

Realistically, with graphics like that, it should run perfectly on a 400 G3 with a 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro.

And instead it ran like ass on a 400 MHz G4 Sawtooth...

Well, I run it on a 400 MHz G3 iMac with a 8MB Rage 128 Pro, and I get something around 30 FPS with all grpahics low at 640*480. That's far from perfect, but far from ass as well.

I'd call that pretty pathedic at that resolution and those settings.

Well, considering that my friends 733 PC with a 16 MB card gets the same results at the same settings, I'd say it's none to shabby.

I wouldn't know. I've never tried Rogue Spear on a PC. I was simply pointing out that a game with such poor graphics should get far better framerates on lower end machines than it does.

I might add that what you say doesn't sound very accurate. A game won't gain optimization through a port, and if he has twice the VRAM, he should be getting much better framerates than you, so I would question that.

Well, granted, it is a Celeron, so that might explain something. I also have more ram (384 vs. his 192) and keep my system gernerally devoid of extra software/progs that start when the computer starts. His has digital camera, printer, MS Office task launchers, and a bunch of other programs that starts up when windows starts.

...Then there's always the fact that a Mac is worth a PC of nearly double the clock speed...

RS on a PC is  easier you get good FPS, and usally no lag if you have a good connection. They thing is people acuse PCers of aimbotting cheating ect. They have no lag and perfect FPS, and skill thats it.

How enchantingly profound.

I used to get around 30fps on my 350 iMac at 800x600 and most settings at mid-high.  That's some old-ass hardware ? I'd consider it decent performance.  Please see SimCity 4 for "pathetic performance" (cringe-worthy, actually).

Quake 3 is an old game right?
It came out at about the same time as RS did on pc...
blah blah blah moores law, blah blah faster computers blah blah blah better graphics blah blah blah.
If you have an imac(or any g3) you have no right to complain about shitty framerates.

If i bought into the rage about fast framerates making any clown into a god, i'd be worried about ace going from playing GHR on a 500mhz tibook to a 2ghz G5 with countless gigs of ram, lucky my g5 will get here before his  ;)

Ghost Recon is one of those games where a players skills are hardly effected by poor framerates. I could go from 40-60 on my mac, to 200 on my PC and play about the same. UT 2003, AA, RS, MOH:AA - faster paced games are effected more.

you're right to a degree typhy, urban maps with many corners are affected more than say wilderness (that, and any map with nade spamming noobs)
