Oh man what a great thread. I agree with all of brain and spike's choices, in addition to glider and crystal quest. It is tough to beat dark castle though.

Heart of China, never got longer than Shanghai tough.

And all of those "use item" "pick up" "talk to" etc... "role playing games"

Oregon Trail... yea it was a learing program.. but it was addictive and the only game we could play in school!!!

Word to Oregon Trail. That's definitely old school. Escape Velocity is of course a classic as well.

Castles: Siege and Conquest. God I loved that game. Dino Park Tychoon was pretty happenin' too. Ooh, and The Taskmaker. That was a fun rpg kinda game. My favorite so far is Escape Velocity, though. I would play that game for hours and hours and hours. Good times.

PoP and Dark Castle, of course, also Out of this World/Another World is another classic.
Not to forget the EV series, I remember when I first got that game on couple of floppy disks. All those old RPG's too. Vette was kind of lame though, never really liked that.

Barrack and the Marathon series.

     Castles: Siege and Conquest holds a special place in my heart. That was the first game that I ever figured out the AI in, so I could win under any conditions. Plus, having a line of like twenty archers, stacking them all on top of each other, then watching The World's Most Powerful Arrow take down a knight in one shot was a beautiful thing.

     Maelstrom, EV, Spaceward Ho!, Apeiron, Rescue! (http://ftp://members.aol.com/tomdcusa/rescue2.0.5.sit), Quest for Glory 1, Simcity 2000, The Ancient Art of War, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road...

     But the winner has to be Marathon 2. That game took up way more of my time than any of these others. Physics Model modding was fun as hell. : )

Ancient Art of War at Sea has to be the win.  Oregon Trail shouldn't count because it was a mainframe game (like trek) out a good 10 years before the mac (and Apple 2 before the Mac as well).  

Crystal Quest was the first game we ever modified.  We changed all the sounds in the game.  

Other games we played on the old SE were Hunt for Red October, Falcon (used to hook up all the Mac2's up in the computer lab with printer cables to get some cool LAN dogfighting in).  We had Prince of Persia and Dark Castle too.  But nothing beat the hours you could spend with Ancient Art of War at Sea.  It was the first game I can remember with a world editor.  

BTW, what is considered "old school"?  I would consider it anything that ran back before PPC myself.  Not games that you can still run today.  Games that were out with System 6 and 7.

I would agree with the System 6/7 era. Also, anything that came in a fat binary is definitely old school. That was definitely the high point of the era of classic Mac gaming.

Damn I can't believe no one has mentioned Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.  That game was the most bad ass fligt sim ever, I also recently heard it was posssible to play this game multiplayer which makes me wish I still had it.  The orignal Wolfenstein 3D was also an awesome game, but the thing i didnt like a bout it is I beat all 150 some odd levels, killed countless nazi's, zombies, german sheppards, Dr's, and even hitler in his cyborg suit, and all I got was a lousy "game over" message.  Other good games were sim ant, sim tower, sim city 2000, and syndicate.  But Chuck Yeagers Air Combat was by far my favorite.

     I totally forgot about CYAC, which is weird because Alaric, Bucc, and I were just talking about it the other day on NF. I used to take a MiG-15 and fly against 15 Yak-9s (Yak-10s? I can't remember the number). The Yaks were tough as nails and their bullets hurt, so it was a real challenge even if I was in a jet. Plus, the box replays of those matches were damn cool. : D

Well back in the days when I didnt know a word of English (I was living in New York City) I would go over to my freinds house and play two great games. I would play Harpoon and the ever addictive TiE Fighter. Of coarse since I wasnt playing any computer in Russia, your old school games are probablly more old school than mine.

Sam and Max Hit the Road, Dark Forces, Indiana Jones, Full Throttle..hmm Oragon Trial..and those board games made into mac games..like Stalingrad...very boring..but cool

I personally preffered the WW2 planes.  My favorite was the p51 mustang.  And for the last kill I would always fly my plane into the enemy and bail right before the 2 planes would collide.  It was also fun using the vietnam era jets and pitting them against the shitty old propeller fighters.

Im suprised in all you, Barely (if anyone) mentioned Sim City Classic. Not to mention a newly deamed old game ?War. Most of you probly never heard of ?War but still, I like it....Mmm shooting PCs and bill gates space invaders style.... :-[

Ooooooh i forgot Kill Barney. It was a game where you got to nuke, stab, electrocute, and shoot Barney until he died. Only 5 levels though.

I cant believe you guys didnt mention WINGS OF FURY ( or was this just for Amiga?) and of course Indiana Jones 3+4 with the awesome fighting scenes against Nazi's in castle and temple? guys guys... ;D

For me, StarCraft is an old game and for manny others.

Personally i think Starcraft isnt old school at all.  But it did remind me of warcraft: orcs vs humans.  This was one of my favorite games ever and would be my number if the catapults didnt hit my own units so often.   The demon summoning owned too.

Zany Golf, catsles seige and conquest (as mentioned), Lode Runner (damn game never ended), Power Pete, Defender of the Crown and whatever else would run on a IIGS or Power PC

Ok, almost nothing gets more old school than Maelstrom I have to say, props to the guy who mentioned it.

Oh yea and the Where in the world is carmen sandiago game was also a cool old school game for a learining game. that and Origon trail both started on the first apple series (befor macintosh) and carried over to the old macs. now thats old school! (oh and who could forget the PONG wannabe freeware games to many to name but i had some old school ones lol)

Brain, I don't think HL2 actually counts as vapor ware, more like 'not-yet-released-but-probably-won't-ever-be-anyway'-ware.

LeeHarvy, Oregon Trail was on the Apple][ before the mac, but it was around before Apple]['s as well.  It was an old mainframe game.  We used to play it on the terminals that used paper, not monitors, back in the day.

Defender of the Crown used to run on the old black and white macs, that's a good pick, so is Load Runner, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned Zork.  

This brings up an interesting thought.  How many of you actually used a mac before they were in color?  And a Mac Classic doesn't count, because there were many color ones out at that time.  But an old Plus, or and SE or SE/30.  Maybe a 512 even.  That's old school.  8MHz baby! with 1MB of RAM and a 20MB HD!

Well, I had a classic, just a little after I got it, the color ones came out.

8 Mhz with a speed doubler to make it 16 Mhz, 2MBs of RAM, and a 40MB Hard Drive. ( Black and white ).

     I used a friend's dad's Mac Classic back in the day. I still smile whenever I hear that distinctive startup tone.

The oldest I've had the pleasure of being in the family was a Apple IIsi. Pretty old, but not the oldest. That thing rocked with Sim City and Kid Pix. <looks over at closet where it sits>

Ive got to agree with Loth that Marathon 2 is the best game of all time.  

But, if old school doesnt include M:2, then how about Duck Hunt, black and white, for the Apple SE.  Who could say no to the prospect of going duck hunting with a bazooka?  I know i sure couldnt.

my family had an apple IIc+ back in the day, and everything ran off floppy discs. i remember Taipan, this asian pirate game where you travel the seas and trade opium and sink ships. Mobius, a ninja game. Where in the world is carmen sandiego was cool i guess. and some submarine game, before harpoon.
that was in the mid eighties, then zork and warcraft came out. hehe, my last time my mom saw my ibook she was tryin to tell me bout how much memory the old IIc+ had. so i looked it up, and was stunned to see a whole 1MB ram. damn couldnt even hold an mp3 file. such is life. my ibookse is 366 mhz 193 ram. at the time it was the top ibook, three months later the new ibooks had like 500 more mhz, 400 more ram, dvd player and firewire. laugh not all you ghr players and lucky g5 owners, it'll happen to you in the next six months. ;D

     It's ok that it couldn't hold an MP3 file, because it didn't have even one hundredth of the power needed to decode and play one. : )

hmmm, I think I'll take it out of the closet just to try and prove Loth wrong =D.  First thing I'd have to do is find an MP3 player that works on that old of a system though.

     I doubt you'll be able to find a 68k MP3 player, Bucc. It would certainly be interesting, but I just don't think that the 68k Macs had the power to make writing an MP3 player for 'em worthwhile, especially one like the 25 MHz 68030 of the IIci.

The famed Myth Series period.  I say that is one of the best games ever, I never played marathon though.  Either way both marathon and myth were made by the same company, Bungie Studios.

As for 68k MP3 players, soundapp can't play them in real time.. I know this. Just not enough power in a 68k machine, it'll skip and blip in and out. But you can download MP3's them and decode them to AIFF or something. It can take a few minutes depending on your comp.. i was doing this on a 33 MHz '040
