*DAMN R6 Forum

Well kiddies,
Im soo sick of flame wars that i decided that i should start a new thread..with less hate.

A month ago my girlfriend came to me and said "when are you gonna read harry potter??!"  Now i said, "For the 10th time, Im not reading that faggot shit!!!!"  Well eventually we made a deal, I woul read potter and she would read one of my books...in the end I have to say...I really liked the first one and now Im reading number 4!  Yes, maybe being 18 and reading harry potter is pathetic...but there are 50 year olds who do too ;) ;D

So what kind of books to you all read??
I got my women to read my favorite writer Chuck Palahniuk.  Chuck has written books like Fight Club (which the movie is based from), Survivor, and Choke (which my gf is reading).  I have also read some Tom Clancy and books from other authors about Ninjas, war, life..you name it.  So come on!! Stop the hate and tell me wat you enjoy reading...if any of you can read..  ;) ;) ;D

Hmm. I've always liked Tom Clancy books (before I started playing RS). The only books I really like are spy thrillers and anything with war in it. haha. I used to read a lot of non-fiction stuff about WW2, but then I got the History channel, and now reading is for weenies.  ;)

My favorite fiction author is John Irving, author of books like The World According to Garp, A Prayer for Owen Meany, and The Cider House Rules. The majority of what I read though is books on radical and progressive politics and social issues, by authors like Chomsky, Zinn, Schlosser, etc. My favorite book ever is The Stranger, by Albert Camus.

Since the topic of Harry Potter was brought up, I think this is a perfect time to share my pwn of Typhy.  ;D

eh, not so sure about the tom clancy books, at least the new ones. right now im reading p.g wodehouse, an old english writer whose pretty funny. plus some stupid ass book for school.

I enjoy the action and wit, and ingenuitive storylines from Clive Cussler. He writes now using more than one character, but the only ones I like (and own) are the ones with his character Dirk Pitt. This author has it all. Check some out.

I finished reading the most recent Harry Potter book, whichever one it is about a month ago.  I found it interesting!  Had lots of adventures and made my imagination come back to life.  Oh well, I am being forced to read 3 books for English in 6weeks, so if you'll excuse me please.

     Jackal, I had a similar experience with my best friend. I read the first three Harry Potter books, and was trying to get him to read them too. He kept saying that he wouldn't read them and that I was some kind of retard for reading them. I finally talked him into reading the first one. He came back the next day, handed it back, and said, "It was great, fuck you. Gimme the next two."

     I mostly read science fiction. My favorite author is James P. Hogan, but I read or have read the work of dozens of authors. I also read fantasy, and a smattering of historical/nonfiction/other books. Having run out of unread books in my possession, I'm currently rereading "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Diamond. It's a truly excellent book.

Have you read "Guns, Germs, and Steel"? Another classic by Diamond. Good to see that you are reading anthropology.

yeah.. i've read all harry potter's over 5 times each (including the newest).. although JKR isn't my fave author.. i like tolkien, clancy, vince flynn ( like a clancy write... great books) and tons other.. i've read 28 books this summer lol

O ya i forgot about Lord Of The Rings and Redwall those are good also.

I could never get into Tolkien pat, i dont know why...


I read fantasy and all that jazz, I usually read mostly in the summer though. Im soo busy writting and reading acticles for the school newspaper that I dont have a lot of time to sit and read for a good 2 hours.

Remember those The Adventures ofYoung Indiana Jones books, they were sweet. In fact, the newier ones are pretty cool too.  A great book is  The illistrated History of the Gestapo, great shit if you are interested in the workings of the Third Riech (spelling?)

Most peole have stop reading the Lord Of The Rings books because of the movies thats are out on comming out

I read the hobbit within 1 day, then proceded to read the set of LotR books I purchased around 2 weeks before FotR was released in theatres.

I finished all the books with one day to spare 8).

Interesting.  In my case, I started reading the LoTR series because of the movies.  I've just begun Return of The King, and have absolutely loved the books so far.

Back to Harry Potter...I was quite surprised to find myself enjoying the first book after starting to read it.  I flew through the first 3 books, then the 4th after that came out.  Strangely, it wasn't the same for the 5th book.  I bought it the week it came out, read the first 150 pages, thought Harry was an asshole, and picked up LoTR for the first time.  I haven't gotten back to Harry Potter yet, but I hope to sometime.  

Harry is an asshole in the 5th book. He's not perfect, JKR made sure that he wouldn't be. His character has the flaws of adolesence and that's part of what makes the books great. They aren't perfect superheros.
Cobra, you should get back to the 5th it was my favorite of the whole series.
LotR is my favorite series ever; i've read each book multiple times  8)

I like to read Stephen King, Tom Clancy and any books on the Veitnam war or on snipers!

BTW 2 other great book to read for any one thinking about being a DJ is "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, A history of the disc jocky", and "How To DJ Right"  Both written by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. They are good book on the histoy of DJing and the different styles of DJing. check them out

I'm currently reading my 1st Tom Clancy book, after being inspired to read one from playing so much RS. ;D

I'm reading "The teeth of the Tiger".  Awesome story so far.  It's about intercepting the arabs and colombians from becoming allies.  Of course the Arabs want the colombians to smuggle them in to the U.S., and right around the corner are the Special Agents taking care of business.  ;)

     You should try Red Storm Rising, Rapid. It's the best Tom Clancy book, IMO. It's Clancy's version of what would have happened if Russia had let the Cold War go hot and attacked America & allies. Interesting read from the perspective of understanding modern war, if nothing else.

Ahhhh, that book sounds good as well Loth.  I'll have to read it as well.  After I read this book, I am definately planning on buying and reading more of his books.  (I still have to buy and read Rainbow 6)

Man, what an imagination!!!  I haven't got bored reading it yet.  Talk about interesting! ;)

Red Storm Rising was excellent, but I still think Patriot Games is his best book. The book was so good that even though the movie was by far the best of the movies, it still didn't even live up to the book IMO. He digs deep into the personal character of Jack Ryan in the book, and I think the book ending was perfect.

     I read "The Hunt For Red October" years ago, and enjoyed it so much that I started reading other Clancy books. I read "Red Storm Rising," "Patriot Games," "The Cardinal of the Kremlin," and at least one, maybe two others that I can't remember. The only one I remember anything about is Red Storm Rising, which is why I recommend it as his best work. I read "Rainbow Six" just recently (about six months ago) and am no longer a fan of Clancy's work. His style is terrible. I enjoyed R6 anyway, just because of my RS whoring.

Clancy is good at having his books turned into films..and games.

The problem with Clancy is too much attention to detail...that man could write 6 pages in little print on how a grenade works. R6 had a lot of detail aswell which, IMO, made the book too long and drawn out.  Try Polintika..great Clancy book. Its about an organisation that attacks New York on News Years Eve, 1999.

Am I the only player of Tom Clancy's games who finds his books to be utter shit?

     Tasty: nope.

I don't know, I thought "Rainbow Six" had a kind of lame story but it kept me reading anyway. I started reading "the Bear and the Dragon" a while back but never got really far, gotta go back to that book sometime.

LOTR is an amazing trilogy and is by far the best fantasy work ever written imo, I'm not going to read Harry Potter because I think her style is just too amateuristic, although she has a lot of vivid imagination... Also I like to be able to keep teasing my friends who read the books.

When it comes to SciFi I really love the "Hugo and Nebula"-prize winner collections, I haven't had the guts to venture out into the real SciFi jungle yet though but I probably will sometime in the future.

Right now I don't have much time for reading but I try to get back to my book "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, awesome book that really explains how modern physics work and makes it sound easy. I'd recommend it to anyone. After this I plan to read a collection of Japanese stories and poems titled "Essays in Idleness" by Yoshida Kenko, written in the 14th century.

Currently reading "Schopenhauer's Porcupines: Intimacy and Its Dilemmas - Five Stories of Psychotherapy"

...oh and I am also skimming through this month's Nature Immunology.

Anyone here remotely interested in *any* of these things?

I use to read a lot more than I did now, I'm currently attempting to read Red Rabbit but can never get around to it often.  As far as good books, I found the Bourne series, by Robert Ludlum to be great.  I actually liked the second one, The Bourne Supremacy the best but I've seen other's think it was the worse.  As far as Tom Clancy books,  out of the 5 or 6 that I've read I found Without Remorse to be the best.  I generally like spy/action thriller's but a good sci-fi or fantasy is pretty good too.  For the most part, the LotR books were pretty good, the story was great even if the older, more formal, english became tiring to read for extended periods of time.  As much as people like the Harry Potter books I have never cared to read them.

To all those Potter fans...

After the 7th book, she might make a prequal series about Tom Riddle and the rise of Lord Voldemort (tom riddle) and the Death Eaters. Very Sweet.

I hope her book production isn't going to rise exponentially 'cos in that case we'll have like a thousand Harry books by the year 2010. ;D

someone mentioned Albert Camus - The Outsider. Fkn wicked book about a moroccan guy caught for killing a man and how he gets bannged up. V cool book.
Also check out "perfume" by Alexander S?skind. A modern novel about an 19th century parisian perfumier who kills ppl for the essence of human to put in his scents. This is one of my all time fave books. Well funny and sad, full of pathos real nice. Sounds boring here but i shit you not....
finally, seeing as we're all playing tom clancy's games, yes, R6 i thought was great. Ding chavez and all those lot really kick ass. mb all the detail he goes into is too much for some ppl, but i quite like that shit so...thumbs up from me
