Title: Help a noob
Post by: 0 Kilz:M: on July 03, 2003, 01:11:23 pm
ok, so when I get this tower I would like to transfer some files from my imac over to it. Can someone please explain how I would do this. I really dont wanna burn a bunch of damn cd's. Also, if I partition my hard drive into 4 20gig sections, can I set pw's for each HD. Yes I have some things my kids and wife should'nt see.

Im sure I'll be back with more later...thanks for any help in advance.

If you have a router, just connect both comps to it and use AFP, FTP, or some other data transfer system to toss the files across the network. If you don't have a router, spend $10 and buy a crossover Ethernet cable so that you can connect the two computers directly without a router.

Or you could go cheaper and just make your very own cross connect cable  ;D.  I didn't take 2 years of cisco for nothing, woooo cabling building! heh

1) if you already have 2 ethernet cables, you can get a cheap hub (if you don't already have one) for like $12 and use that to connect the computers.

2) if you don't have the extra cables, a crossover cable is only like $15 at CompUSA, and it's easier to buy one then make one.

3) once you have both macs on the same network, turn appletalk on (both computers) and you will see the other computers if you chose "connect to server" under the "go" menu in the finder.  That will let you mount the HD of your old computer on the new one, and just drag and drop the files you want.

4) while partitioning the hd's and then encrypting them is one option, I wouldn't chose it.  Just create different users for you and your family.  They don't have to use passwords, but yours should.  If the little woman asks why, just tell her that's the admin account so the settings don't get fucked up (or, tell her that's to hide the porn, whatever).  Under panther, you can even add a level of encryption to your home directory, but unless your kids / wife are little computer hackers, just using different accounts should work fine for you.

1) most Macs don't need crossover cables to connect; just try to plug a normal cable in both macs.

2) easiest way: if you have a 6-pin firewire cable, connect the 2 macs and start one up in target disk mode. to do that, press "T" at startup. after that, the internal disk should show up on the desktop of the other mac.
