Title: Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Jeb on April 28, 2003, 10:04:06 pm I'm not gonna talk about how cool the store feature is or anything, just how to connect to your friend's itunes libraries via itunes (same thing as icommune).
First off in order to do so you need to know how to open ports in your firewall or router, The port that needs to be opened is port 3689 tcp&udp. then go into the itunes preferences and click on the sharing tab, you can configure access, and a password that way, plus what playlists to share. Once that is accomplished someone can connect to your library via your Ip Address. in itunes 4, under advanced there it has a selection for "connect to shared music" Simply copy in the ip address and your golden. I haven't had a chance to test this yet because I'm the only genius who knows how to open ports on gr. Snipe connected to my library and says that songs can be streamed, but not copied. This kinda blows, but overall apple has done an amazing job. Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Supernatural Pie on April 28, 2003, 10:37:16 pm It's cool as hell! ;D
Plus the green looks better in the dock than the purple (though i'm sure bondo may argue otherwise.) ;) Ahhh... the no-copy-ability Oh well. I guess we can't have everything. Still, a very cool update for itunes... not to mention the 99?/song 1 click buy feature, as well as 30 second previews, and GOOD, RELEVANT, RELIABLE searches! There's something Limewire could never offer. Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Supernatural Pie on April 28, 2003, 10:56:21 pm muahahhahahahahhaha
;D Bondo, please don't email apple asking for iTunes 5 to have a pink icon. That would just be wrong.... Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: The Ghost of Bondo on April 28, 2003, 11:50:59 pm Indifference is the opiate of the masses.
Besides, green is my favorite color (to match my eyes) Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: *DAMN Hazard on April 29, 2003, 12:51:02 am The new iTunes owns! So does my forum icon.
<========= Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Mr.Mellow on April 29, 2003, 03:41:41 am If you want the best file-sharing application available for Mac, get DrumBeat X. It eats up processor like weasels on Bondo's face, but it's worth it. It's 53250235x better than LimeWire or any other junk you can find for Macs. I don't know what the website is, but I'm sure you can find it.
Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Mr. Lothario on April 29, 2003, 04:13:03 am As far as only being able to stream music, Ambrosia is working on a utility called WireTap which allows you to record audio that's going through your computer. This includes recording streamed audio. There's also StreamRipper, which may or may not work for this purpose (I've never used it). My point is, there are ways around the limitation.
Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: The Ghost of Bondo on April 29, 2003, 04:16:28 am It eats up processor like weasels on Bondo's face, but it's worth it. Huh? Anyway, Drumbeat is lame, I can find plenty of things...getting them to download is another matter. Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: *DAMN Hazard on April 29, 2003, 04:24:55 am I find acquisition the best mp3 downloading app especially with the new version.
Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Mr.Mellow on April 29, 2003, 05:01:15 am Bondo, you just have to be patient with it. It's one of those apps that if you leave it running all day, 90% of the stuff will be downloaded, but you can't expect quick results. It's good if you run your computer overnight.
Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: kami on April 29, 2003, 04:06:20 pm The new iTunes is really cool but it's not exactly as easy as you're saying Jeb, if you have a router you have to modify the address iTunes gives you, otherwise it just gives you an internal network IP. Normally, without a router, it would give you the outer network directly since there is no inner network.
The whole feature really works best inside internal networks anyway, gonna' have the powebook (with AirPort) hooked up to speakers in the yard by the pool this summer ;D The fact that you can't copy the music is just a big DUH. You think the record companies would sit still while Apple released an app like that? Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Supernatural Pie on April 29, 2003, 08:47:52 pm Well.... umm...
Yeah? No, I don't think many people really expected you to be able to copy music, but when I was able to connect to jeb's playlist, and listen to all his songs, I was anxiously wondering if i could drag one of his songs to my playlist. Anyway, for the record. Pirating is wrong. Then again, $1/song is wrong too. Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: jn.loudnotes on April 30, 2003, 01:52:27 am Pirating wrong? Personally I don't think so. I've always considered intellectual property to be pretty much public domain. Anytime the government attempts to regulate people's thoughts you risk infringing their rights - and I think the direct product of those thoughts (hence the term intellectual property) should be considered along those lines. For me, as long as you give credit where credit is due - you should be able to do with books, music, and inventions as you like. Obviously it would be wrong to profit off someone else's work, but spreading it is generally beneficial to them.
Oh and yes, iTunes is cool 8) Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: The Ghost of Bondo on April 30, 2003, 05:28:08 am Obviously it would be wrong to profit off someone else's work, but spreading it is generally beneficial to them. I know I've bought more CDs because of peer-to-peer than I would have otherwise...even if I have songs from CDs I don't own. I have no qualms supporting artists who I enjoy...which is why I own about 150 CDs Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: tasty on April 30, 2003, 08:47:22 am As a music fanatic (150 CDs purchased in the past year), I simply cannot imagine buying music without file sharing. I listen almost exclusively to indie music, which is played very little on the radio and whose artists fully support file sharing. If I like an album, I buy it. Otherwise the artists have nothing to worry about because I am not listening to their music anyway. I have never downloaded a full CD as mp3s and burned it to a CD-R. I think that file sharing is absolutely necessary to experiencing music and breaking out of the MTV/Clear Channel/newspaper paradigm of shitty, big label crap music. Therefore I applaud Apple for tacitly supporting file sharing without getting in legal trouble but fault them for getting only major labels in on their 99? per song gig.
Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: *DAMN Mauti on April 30, 2003, 11:29:33 am Offtopic in response to Tasty:
Tasty which indie groups do you listen? I'm looking for something new next to the good old: Pixies, At the drive in, JJ72, Mercury Rev, (Transplants), James, Interpol,... (Sonic Youth has to less melody for my taste) Gimme some names please! Bye, Mauti Title: Re:Itunes 4 & built in file sharing Post by: Jeb on April 30, 2003, 09:01:39 pm An app has been released that allows you to connect to various people's shared music over the net (sorta like a kdx tracker). Sadly this app doesn't allow private bookmarking of friends hosts, it displays a list of people who are sharing their music. Select a host, and it will import it have itunes connect to that host.

the microphones, dismemberment plan, magnetic fields, ted leo and the pharmacists, the notwist, cat power, the books, and cex just to name a few. If you ever wanna talk music, my AIM screen name is "tastyeggs" and I'm on all the time ;D. Ya, apparently... I've only taken and completed CCNA 1 - 4 so I wouldn't know how to open a port...
