Title: Poll regarding old clans.
Post by: Supernatural Pie on October 26, 2002, 07:16:17 pm
This kind of shit is really starting to piss me off. When a clan has a long life span, and the leader(s) decide that it's time for it to end, then that should be allowed to happen, without worry of it being brought back by some newbie who doesn't even care, and lets it die two days after it was already started. The reason that I am so pissed off at this is because it has already happened to two clans that I used to be the leader of. I co-lead MI6 with Tijnie, and that clan lived for over a year, and a few months ago, some newbies decided that they'd restart it with completely new members and new leaders. It died a couple weeks into it's rebirth. MI6 used to be a very well liked and respected clan. People in the old MI6 included myself, Tijnie, Jeb, Bigpat, Pyrex, and Chaled, to name a few. When the new MI6 came along, I know it pissed us all off, but there was nothing we could do about it. That clan had had its memories, good ones, and now we all decided to go our separate ways (or stick together in Cunt). Another clan that I had been the leader of was SAS. That was really a decent clan with nice people who were fun to play rs with, and we even won some cb's here and there. Members of that included myself, Ghost, Eagleye, Arctic Fox, Seraphim-X, and several others. I'm not going to complain about the new SAS as much as the new MI6, because at least SAS has some dedicated members who are staying with the clan, and the clan is still going, but when people start a new clan that used to be a well liked and respected clan, the leader should take on an obligation to:
1. Ask the previous leader if it would be alright for him to restart the clan.
2. Stick with the clan for at least a few months.
When people do not do this (MI6) it really does piss me off.

As some of you may already know, there is a new clan out there. CIA. Any veterans of GameRanger know all about this clan. The struggles, the good times, the bad times, the leader, and the skorpion. This clan was like no other. It had everything, but when a few people come along months later and decide to start a clan called "CIA," it turns a few heads, and angers a few people. This clan had it's interesting life, and it ended, and that was that. It never should have been brought back. So, I am asking all of you to consider what I have said, and realize that there is a certain level of sportsmanship that goes with allowing old clans to rest in peace. I am adamant about my view that clans should not be restarted without the previous leader's full consent. I hope you feel the same way. If this poll turns out to show that people do not like having old clans being brought back by people who had no affiliation with the old clan whatsoever, then I would like the Battle League Staff to make a rule which does not allow clans with the same name as old ones to be allowed in the Battle League.

I know that some admins may just say, "Well, when the leader of the old clan closed it, they basically said that they do not care about it anymore, and so it is essentially justified in having a new clan with the same name with different leaders." Don't use this as an arguement, because it is absolute bull shit, and you know it. I still care about MI6 and SAS, but that doesn't necessarily mean I should have to wear the tags on my name just to protect its name.

So please, vote "no" to the question: "Should clans, that have disbanded or died, be allowed to come back under a new leader without the consent of the old leader?"

In my opinion, if a clan is retired like PsYcO and SWAT, and POD, then the name should be retired and not used again, if a clan dies. ( i.e., everyone leaves and the person just takes off the clan  name ). If a respected clan is retired, or in the case of CIA not retired, but forcfuly disban, it should be against the rules to use it again. In the cases of some names, like XaF and things like that, they were around for just a few weeks, and no one cared about them.

I agree.  Famous (or infamous) clans should be left to R.I.P.  When a new bunch of people come along and decide to use a clan name that has already had it's fame, it is impossible for the new clan to live up to the name.  It just tarnishes the good names of previously retired clans.

I believe that people think respect will come automaticly if they choose use a well known clan name.  But the only way to truly gain respect as a clan is to gain it the old fashoned way, just as clans like PSYCO, SWAT, or POD had to.

I say that we let retired clans live in our memorys the way they should, instead of being cheaply resurrected.

One other exception I would voice here.

I agree with what you are saying, but if a long standing clan's (I'll use KoS as an example, not for any reason except I doubt this would happen) leader wants to break up the clan, but the clan itself doesn't want to break up, or use a different name.  A clan is more then just it's leader.  In other words, if Ultimo was just fed up and wanted to join AK, but all the clan members didn't want to give up the KoS name, he shouldn't be able to make them.  It's not copyrighted.  Even if it was, they'd all own a piece too.

This is, like I say, an exception.  I wouldn't see it happening often.

I agree with that Bucc.

I'll have to agree with Bucc, but in the example given, the rest of the people who want to continue to use the KoS name should at least ask Ultimo if they can use it and continue the running of the clan.

i'm the only half assed clan leader that seems to have posted so far,
but i wouldn't want some random troop of noobs taking the name ?(uNt? to get some name recognition. but in the case of the leader leaving the clan or whatever, surely the rest of the clan should be able to continue.
That didn't happen in the Psyco/kota thing, i'm not sure why

CD and nuke wanted to make a name for themselves and get out of the PsYcO shadow.

All of these are good points, but I don't think there should be any blanket rule for the BL except that retired clans cant be brought back to life without the former leader's approval.

In cases of a leader leaving, it should be taken on a case by case process.

Assassin, that's probably the best solution.  With a note that it is RETIRE, not just vanish, like so many clans.  From my reading, I've only seen 4 clans that you guys seem to talk about that are "retired", Psyco, SWAT, POD and Janitors (but I can't figure out if they are or aren't the way they talk).  You should actually make a list of retired clans maybe.  After all, some newbs may come around and want the name POD or SWAT and have never heard of the old clans.

I also assumed that the clan would talk to the leader before hand about it, just not getting his permission in my example.

Doesn't it make u feel good when noobs try to be like the old clan cuz they loved the old clan so much.  it makes u feel important.

Well, the way I see it, like Bucc said if the clan doesn't actually die but rather the leader wants to stop, the rights for the clan should stick with the bulk of the clan and not just the leader.

If a clan dies and is actually gone then it shouldn't be able to be resurrected unless done so by the leaders when it went down (or the founders if it is different).

On the other hand, with the rate that some clan leaders go in disbanding and creating new clans *looks at Kilzo and Night Hawk* all possible names will be taken by the end of the year ;).

wow, nice results on the poll so far.

Anyway, when I made my original post, i was trying to think of the word to use, but just couldn't. Anyway, almost every time I said "die" I meant to say "retire," which explains why I kept adding in things like, "respected, and well liked." It does make a difference. Bondo, you make a good point by saying all the names would be taken up too quickly with all the people who start clans every other week, so if a new clan is only around for a short time, or no one really cared about it in the first place, then that name should still be available.

Don't forget about the DAP rebirth...lead by bushy the 2nd time, how long did it last, 5 days?

OMFG I VOTED FOR YES ACCIDENTALLY!!! BAAAAAHHHH  >:( >:( >:(  can an admin change it to 'NO' please?

I combined 3 posts into one for iBeer. No, we can't change the polls, but it isn't like your wrong vote would upset the majority. - assassin

I've seen several disbanded clans members come back after a 5-8 month abscence thinking their clan is still around. Noticing it's gone they just start it up naming themselves the leaders.

I agree that the old leader should be consulted, but what if the old leader never comes on GR anymore. Would that person starting it up automatically have the right?

LMAO Bondhoe, although I have had many clan names and have a lot more in mind, this will be the last you see me in. I just could never make up my mind on the name, now I have. But in regards to this subject: Let sleeping dogs lie. I think well respected clans (or ones with bad reps, but longevity) should be allowed to disappear/retire or w/e. And if their is any conflict the leader should do as Assassin and Sniper have, that is to keep the clan TAG, that way nobody can dispute it. I am such a N00b, I never got to see PsYcO, POD, or janitors play...I saw SWAT a little bit....but those are well respected names even among us n00bz, so I cant see anyone trying to take those names....

So BL Admins, how about a ruling on this? It seems like the people have decided (even with iBeer's noob vote) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/adminowns.gif)

ok wtf WHO IS POSTING UNDER MY NAME  >:( i think it was the shadow noob with his limited vocab and poor grammar.

anyway, i think that yes, it could be taken as offensive when you see your old tag on some noob, but hell, do you have a copyright on it?! ok, kilzo and mattster could claim rights over every tag they had and soon there wouldn't be any tags left to be had! I mean sheesh guys, it's just an acronym. And MI6 was bound to come back as it's a real life agency or something like that. I think as long as the new members aren't claiming a legacy off of the old clan, it's fine, after all you did abandon that tag. To claim that a few letters of the alphabet ever belonged to you is ridiculous. If lets say if in 20 years(assuming  *NADS wouldnt be around :)), by some miracle, scott kevill hasn't been mauled by angry homosexual apes and GR is still running... a clan named *NADS comes along. If by another act of god i make an appearance and see the clan tag, what do i do? I shrug, reminisce, and congratulate the newbies on their fine choice of a clan name. Hell, it could mean Not Agitated Dookie Smokers or Naked Apes Donning Smocks... i wouldnt even care if it did mean Newbie Annihilating Death Squad. The point is you need to chill out it's just a game  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/beer.gif)

kilzo,
you shoulda remembered psyco, i remembered you when i was a wee noob a year and half ago.
About Mi6, it was a great clan to be in for me because kos said  i wasn't good enough, and it was a fairly well established noob clan. The only downside was Shadow, and anyone who was from Mi6 surely remembers his stupid ass. He is a eurolagger who mods his 56k host, and he constantly put the cunt tag on after we told him time and time again that he sucked.
You can find shadow in the M4 clan now, beware.
