Title: Who is/are your hero(s)
Post by: Cossack on October 11, 2002, 10:50:49 pm
Telling who your hero(s) is/are can tell alot about your self.
For example here are a list of mine.
Putin: A reformer of Russia and making the Ruble rise in value greatly.
Atat?rk: Great modernizer of Turkey, proving that Islam and democracy can mix.
Peter the Great: Great modernizer of Russia in the 17th Century throwing Russia into the modern age.

I idolize the beloved firemen and police officers who show unmatchable courage in the face of adversity every day, protecting America and all things American, and helping bring the nation back together to face the menace brought on by September 11. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/so.gif)

Cossack not a bad list - I'd have to think for a while to put together a good one for me.

I just wanted to put forth the unthinking response before someone else did.  It's great to respect servicemen, but let's save our heroism for those who do more than provide an example.

Like our beloved president. . . (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/icon_lol.gif)

Ok...just so no one said that either  ;)

my heroes:
Ralph Nader- has fought for the public for over fifty years, now in his 70s and still fighting strong. Most honest and moral politician ever, has never compromised his values, has always fought for peace, justice, and equality. Donates well over fifty percent of his income to charity. Damn, just all around he is the man.

Bob Barker - represents the culmination of all pop culture, and gets his way with the ladies.

Stephin Merrit - shows that you can still do innovative, great things with pop music every day and creates the most meaningful and creative music i have ever heard. http://www.houseoftommorow.com

myself - hell I am the shit, and you all know it. Who knows what great thing I will do next? I will probably make a bigger impact on the twenty-first century than anyone else in the world. Plus I am super hot!

Ralph Nader- See Tasty's description, I think he is one of the few men who could actually save this country from impending doom that will happen if we keep electing the same old same old politicians.

My Brother- He has a job in the field he wanted, he has a cool fianc?, he has a nice house in a nice area, basically he has a good life already and he's just out of college.  I think that is enviable enough...even if he is a republican.

John Adams, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson-  These three men are more important than any in American history.  They set the groundwork for how everything is.  I feel they would be appalled if they could see how things were today, I only wish we could have more people like them.

The first I can think of is Lincoln. He did a lot of good stuff, and he has the same birthday as me.

I don't really think i have a hero,
i look up to people who are selfless and put themselves in harms way in order to protect someone else. the firemen and policemen who died on sept 11th are definatly heros.
if anyone says that a sports star is a hero, they need to be shot. Do you think Derick Jeter trys to play so well for sick kids? No he does it to make money.

Well, I wouldn't say that a sports player can't be someone to look up to, but yes maybe Hero would be a bit strong (except for the baseball players who enlisted during WWII to fight for the country, they are heroes).  There are many many sports stars who donate much time and money to charitable activities and to make their fans days.  Then again, that should be considered their duty as sports stars and while they should be commended, it is important to put pressure on those that don't to use what they have for the benefit of more than just themself.

just remember that congress aproved the war powers by a wider margin than in desert storm.
heh, bush isn't a hero, didn't he hide durring the vetname war? then there are people like my dad who enlisted in the vietnam war and fought.

Mine is Nathaniel Hale: Spy during the American Revolution, was caught and was executed. Before he was executed his last word were "My only regret is I only have one life to lose for my country." Just that he had no fears for dieing for his country made him my hero and there is a monument somewhere in NYC that says where he was killed.

my heroes are the 'firsts'  in history, as well as some of he other illuminaries of out time.
einstein
neil armstrong
lance armstrong(cycling isn not a sport that will make you insanely rich)
columbus
etc. etc

all of these people had the guts and determination to do what they did, and often in the face of intense adversity
if he average man had only an ounce of their will power, the world would be much better

SK: You dont know what the hell a "douchecake" is so dont use that word. Also, if all Republicans were rich like you say, Republicans wouldnt have gotten near 50% of the vote last year, think about it.

Brain: Lance Armstrong is extremely rich, but for the most part, cycling wont make you a lot of money (in America).

I wouldn't call Columbus a hero, he started the European colonization and demolition of the native populations and removal of their culture.  Plus he wasn't even the first European to get to N. America.  That would be Lief Erikson in the 11th Century.

first of all Bush isnt exaclty the smartest president we've had, and personally I dont really like republicans and I live in a 90% republican town.
As for my heros Lincoln was on of the best presidents we've ever had. Just look at the way he ran our country during the civil war.
Selfless people like Mother Teresa are heroic
And all those who have triumphed over unsurmountable odds are pretty heroic to.

first of all to sin:  i admire lance armstrong mainly because of the fact that he has gon on to do what he did after he was treated for cancer.

to bondo: i admire  columbus because he had the guts to go out and go across an uncharted ocean. not because of what he did after he landed

Churchill
Zac deLa Rocha (Rage Against The Machine)

Churchill for all his effort in WW2 to keep England united and giving the people inspiration.

Zac deLa Rocha for his protest against oppression of the people through his music. Inspirational, truthful lyrics delivered in a unique way.

woot

This may just be quibbling with semantics, but in my post the point I was trying to make is that most people use the word "hero" a little too loosely.

It's fine to have people who set a good example - they can be excellent role models, idols even.  But looking back to the heroes of old, it seems like the term is getting a little too much usage.

Nowadays we're calling any exceptional person who saves a life or inspires a hero, but it used to require much more than that.

Odysseus, Aeneas, Achilles - they may all have been epic, but it seems like real accomplishment is their heroism.

So not every soldier in battle is the hero - they may be role models if the war is just, but the heroes are those who lead and propel victory.

Emmanuel Goldstien (aka Eric Corley) founder/owner of 2600 magazine. www.2600.com

Keep fighting the good fight Emmanuel!!

Also I'd have to list anyone who's fought to right a wrong or to help give freedom to the people of the world. "De Oppresso Liber"
