Title: We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 02, 2002, 05:00:09 pm I'm in a bit of a twisted situation...
I can't wait for Ghost Recon, but on the other hand, I don't know if my computer can handle it. I have plenty of hd space, so i can do a full install (if that helps,) I have a shitload of RAM (576,) and the most recent operating system (Jaguar.) I have a cable modem (I usually get very good ping on most people's servers.) Now here's the problem. I have a G3 iMac, 350 mhz. I've heard that 450 is the requirement. I have heard that iMac's cannot be upgraded in mhz or processor. What can I do? Will it be alright? Is there a way to overclock my iMac or speed it up in anyway enough for it to be able to handle GhR? Online or offline? Please help me. You guys have helped me before, and I have confidence you can do it again. And please...please don't go (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/offtopic.gif) I need to keep this thread clear of spam, so I can see if there are any real solutions. Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: cookie on September 02, 2002, 05:51:55 pm I took the liberty of finding this for you :) http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~t-imai/imace1.html I don't know how helpful it will prove to be. I'm not really an expert on overclocking iMacs, however it can be done I assume by changing the location of some surface-mount resistors... but i'd look up some further information on how to do this before attempting it because it is quite possible to fuck up your computer (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/shocked2.gif)
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: *NADS Capt. Anarchy on September 02, 2002, 05:56:05 pm the killer will be your vid card, which is same as mine i think, a 8mb ATi rage 128. It needs a 16mb card minimum, and tehre's no real way to upgrade a iMacs video card. suckass, eh?
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: kos.viper on September 02, 2002, 07:35:49 pm 576 is not a "shitload" of RAM now a days, heh
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Jeb on September 02, 2002, 07:54:21 pm your best bet would be to sell the imac
if you don't have anough money for a new g4 imac or tower. you cou buy a 700mhz Snow imac from apple for around 700$ Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 02, 2002, 08:34:09 pm Jeb, if I bought a new iMac, would it be possible to put my 512mb memory block into the new imac?
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: cookie on September 02, 2002, 10:04:16 pm of course!!!!! ;D
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 02, 2002, 10:36:40 pm But then what happens in a year when I have to upgrade again to get any new programs...? Buy yet another computer? I'm not rich.
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: |MP|Buccaneer on September 02, 2002, 11:06:03 pm Snipe, you can upgrade the processor on an iMac (up to G4-500 I think). There are some thrid party processors you can get (Sonnet comes to mind).
But, for that price, and figuring that you'll still have the old video card, I'd say it was time to upgrade. If you want another disposible machine, get a new iMac (but you wont be able to upgrade it either). If you care about upgrading, because a new video card can make up for a slow processor, buy a new tower. There is a place that will even trade in your old computer for cash towards your new one. They sell refubed too, so if you can't afford new, you could find a good refubed model. And you wont be able to reuse that RAM. Sorry Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 02, 2002, 11:33:53 pm Do you know what Sonnet's web page is?
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 02, 2002, 11:41:34 pm LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, APPLE HAS FUCKED ME ONCE AGAIN.
THE ONLY UPGRADABLE IMACS ARE ? iMac 233 MHz, 266 MHz, 333 MHz (Rev. A-D). FUCK THIS BULLSHIT. IF I WANT TO UPGRADE MY COMPUTER WITHOUT PAYING 3,000 DOLLARS FOR A COMPLETELY NEW ONE, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO. FUCK APPLE. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Jeb on September 03, 2002, 12:58:51 am it was comon knowledge when people were buying imacs that they couldn't be upgraded untill sonnet came out with a upgrade for the early ones.
Buy a tower they last longer Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Geek USA on September 03, 2002, 03:29:09 am or, you could spend $200 on an xbox, $50 on xbox live, and another $50 on ghost recon and live happily ever after
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: electronicjo on September 03, 2002, 04:11:53 am I have to agree with Jeb. Don't bother upgrading your iMac, save the money for a tower.

Viper - I'm not sure where that came from...I guess you're talking about Ultimo, but don't forget not all trumpet players are bad ;) Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: electronicjo on September 03, 2002, 04:39:43 am No, actually, that quote is from my personalized text to the left, and it refers to Viper.
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: |MP|Buccaneer on September 03, 2002, 05:06:03 am I'll guess that he found the web site.
Yes, either buy a new tower, or, bit the bullit and buy a new iMac for $1200, knowing that it will only be good for 3 years tops. Remember, your 350 came out October 5, 1999. That will make it 3 years old in a month. 3 years is the expected life of most computers (if computer speeds double every 18 months, that makes it 1/4 speed). Gaming requirements on computers is about as tough as it gets. Oh, and Snipe, why $3000? You can buy a tower cheaper then that. And thrid party CRT's are pretty cheap. Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 03, 2002, 11:49:08 pm I'd rather die.
Ok then, I guess I'll just get a new iMac. How's ebay's reliability when it comes to computers? Or should I stick to something more stable? Cause I'm not really sure how many computers I can afford that apple offers. Umm...does anyone wanna mail me some money? I'll give you my address. If everyone sends a couple bucks, you could do me a great favor!!! ;D You donate a couple bucks, I get a new computer? eh? eh? Doesn't that sound like a nice thing to do? I'll buy you all drinks if everyone chips in! I saw one in person today and it's quite nice. $1699 CDN for one with a combo drive. So i think that's like $100 USD Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: Supernatural Pie on September 04, 2002, 04:20:05 am $1,000*? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~damnr6/yabbse/YaBBImages/hm.gif)
Title: Re:We need more power Captain!! Post by: BTs_Colin on September 04, 2002, 04:24:50 am I dunno...
