aparently it blocks your mac addy meaning that the unique number you mac has is banned from connecting to the server. thats what i've heard

we've discussed this months back when many a permaban was being handed down (vets correct me if you are wrong)  It blocks you by a) GR user number... so dont use that id on any other comp, or it will perma ban that comp too b) IP address c) Hard drive serial number.  So basically, you need a new computer, dynamic IP (or a new IP) and a new copy of GR.  Ethercard might need to be replaced too.  translation: the permabanned are fucked.  Your best shot is to get a friend with much clout with the admins, ex: jn.loudnotes, DAMN mauti, and have them beg the admins, or at least figure out the specifics of why you were banned.  some mistakes have been made.  Of course, usually permabans are well-deserved.

Actually, If you take the HD out of your computer, pop it in another one, and then delete it, you can deal with all of the GameRanger bans placed on it.

Jeb, your MAC addy stands for Machine Address Code. I may be a little off, but from what I know this is a unique code that is derived from various hardware components, one of which being the ethernet card. It would stand to reason that if you got a new ethernet card, your MAC would change. However, no one really knows how Evill exactly bans people. Some commonly held theories are:

A) IP address (pretty much a given)
B) MAC address
C) Hidden file(s) of some sort
D) Some combination of the above 3

Like roy said, if you log into the permabanned account on a different computer, the permaban will get applied to that new computer too. Therefore, don't log in from a friends house and screw him over too. While you could take the time, effort, and possibly money to get around the ban, you could also send a polite email to Evill enquiring about why you were permabanned (if you don't already know), apologizing, and asking for a possibly fixed time period of a ban. After all, a month or two ban could still be enough of a punishment for him to be satisfied yet still leave you room to get back on GR. I asked him one time before about how he felt about people getting around permabans. He said that if they were well behaved afterwards, the ban had the intended effect: discouraging any future problems. If you can show him that things  will be different, my guess is you will be able to get back on. Maybe not right away, but eventually.

Acatully, part of what Ace said is true. However, perhaps a simple tracking of the IP? It would take so much time to get around a ban. Gotta disconnect the internet 'til your IP changes 2 times. Change your Mac Adress by buying a new ethernet card, and or using the correct kind of router. Hidden files, easy, delete and reload your drive. However, I really think that there is more to it than this, there has to be, my personal opinion is that it uses your Hard Drive serial number, however, I don't know if that is able to be done with GameRanger. I've got my personal ideas on how to do it, but hey, the real reason not to come back once you're ban isn't 'cause you can't, it's moral, Is it really right to come back onto Scott's service if he doesn't want you there?

do you know what you did to get perm banned in the first place myst?

although i dont have experience with getting around evill's bans, i can say thet diplomacy would most likely be the cheapest and easiest option with the least possibility for retaliation by evill

If you knew what you were doing, a little creativity with your router is how you get around any ban. I'd rather not dive into it because I don't want to waste the time posting the process of ban hopping. If you really want to know how, I suggest you dig back through the history of the general gossip and look at the numerous topics concerning this issue.

Is it true that if you turn your cable modem off you will get a new ip address?  Somebody told me it changes your ip.  And if that is the case could you just turn your modem off, get a new ip and go back on gr?  Of course though I don't get perma banned so I wouldn't know. ;)

No, it's definitly more complicated than that, Infection.  There is definitly some sort of hardware aspect that the collective we don't fully understand.  But Ass(assin) is right, back in the hayday of the Rain clan with Romeo and Juliet many permabans  were handed down, and the rare few were gotten around.  However, the tried and true method is in fact diplomacy.  Unless you've fucked up real bad, Scott and his cohorts/gurus may have mercy.
