The answer, is simple - Internet Explorer sucks! Just reinstall it, that's the solution to most problems like this, either you can waste hours trying to find whats wrong, or you can take 10 minutes and reinstall it.

Typhy what would you suggest using, Netscape? ?And SK if you can't get the download manager up just delete your preferences. ?The same thing happened to me and it stil didn't work when I reinstalled it. ?Just delete the preferences.

I would first try opening the DL manager manually and seeing what it shows (if anything) when you go to DL something. If that doesn't offer any hints, delete your prefs as advised.

As for IE alternatives, Opera is very good. I just downloaded Mozilla, and I like it more than Opera so far.

Mozilla, or however you spell it, is a great browser, I've used it before, I have it on my Powerbook. Here is the link for it:  http://download.com.com/3000-2143-10117880.html?tag=lst-0-1

And for OS 9.2: http://download.com.com/3000-2143-10117882.html?tag=lst-0-2

I got Mozilla from the Mac OS X download section of Apple's site under Internet Utilities (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/). Opera, Omniweb, Netscape, and iCab are also available from that section. I'm sure there is an equivalent OS 9 download page on Apple's site. Here is just a quick description of what I know of each browser in OS X.

Mozilla - Open source standard for years upon which Opera and Netscape amongst others are based. In my limited experience with it, I have found it to be fairly fast and pretty reliable. Tabbed browsing rocks, but admittedly it doesn't feel as polished as some of the other browsers.

Opera - Unbelievably fast, yet not very reliable. Crashes relatively frequently. More polished than Mozilla, yet not as good as Omniweb or IE.

Omniweb - I haven't used this in a while, but it was an excellent native OS X browser when I first tried it and there were really no other alternatives. I found it to be a very polished browser with good features, yet it was a big processor hog and fairly slow. It may have gotten better, but I have no idea.

Netscape and iCab - I haven't tried either but I have heard they are decently popular so maybe they are worth a try.

What??  You've used Opera and Mozilla but NOT netscape?

How is that even possible?  Has netscape really sunk that low?  (I still miss version 3...download it sometime...it was really cool!)

:(

I tried the beta of Netscape when I first switched to X because it was my fulltime browser in 9. The beta royally blew ass, so I tried other browsers and haven't tried it since. I probably should, but I'm lazy.

A year or so ago, I used to live on iCab. It was a great browser when I used it, and I assume that it hasn't gotten crappier with age. I personally like Omniweb very much. It's a tightly programmed browser, and it shows. It's just missing a few subjectively important features compared to IE, which is why I don't use Omniweb. But give it a try. It is a well-put-together browser.

And be glad that you're using a Mac, where trashing IE is even an option. In fact, maybe I'll go trash it right now just for shits and giggles.

Well, yeah. Netscape just used the code from Mozilla to make Navigator and Communicator. Mozilla IS open source, after all.
