Title: Speaker Placement?
Post by: spike on February 13, 2005, 07:53:55 pm
For xmas I got the JBL Creature II speakers. For those unfamilar, its  a subwoofer, and two small satillite speakers. I have them on my desk at school, with the woofer sitting behind my laptop and the speakers to the side. Above me are two shelves, and below, its just foot space.

The problem is, I notice a whole lot of bass with the settings at normal. At times it sort of overwhelms the words, and gives me a headache. I've tried turning down the bass, but I feel I'm not getting all from the music that I could be. Any ideas on how to situate them so that it doesnt sound bad?

the subwoofer in a 2.1 system should never be in front of you, and not at the same height. i have my 2 logitech speakers on the left and right of my screen and the subwoofer is behind me on the floor.

With my monsoons (satellite upright design) you need to have them on a certain angle in relation to you general direction so that the sound is as crisp as it can be. To really know what to say without actually hearing the problem so all I can say is fiddle with them until it sounds just right.

P.S. Is it just me or has Monsoon gone out of business or disappeared?

Get the base as low down as possible if i were u - floor is the best place for it :) and like civic said behind is better than in front... if you imagine a isosceles triangle ... hold on

You want your ears to be where the left and right sides of the triangle meet at the top, to get the best audio possible in terms of balence and cover around your ears... but the best thing to do is shut your eyes and just adjust them little bits and see how the audio changes! :)

So I put the woofer beneath my bed to the very left of my desk, with the speakers in the same position and it sounds a lot better now.

Good good :D I was thinking about getting some of those speakers actually - since my sterio system died and all my music is on here i want something i can plug the pod into and chill without trying to crank my music up loud enough to drown out the Bowing 747 that is hidden in my G4 Tower :(

My 2.1 setup has one speaker to the right of my computer and one to the left.  My sub is on the floor to the right of me inside a closed shelf... seems to work just great.

I would trust anything that Altec Lansing makes.  If you want more expensive go for these (http://alteclansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=MX5021).  Thoes are actually the ones that I conisidered getting.

$200 is a little pricy, but those speakers sure do look nice... I'm actually using some cheaper Altec speakerd right now and they work perfect for music and gaming.

Well, if your iPod goes on right when you sit down at the computer like me then $200 isn't bad.  Plus they will probably last you a long, long time.
