Title: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BFG on May 28, 2004, 07:25:43 pm
Well i don't know what you guys think about this. But i was sitting here thinking about how many bloody processors we have between us in this  community, and how, between us that is a phenominal power beyond Virgina tech or anything... Most of you folk will know about the Seti@home project, where your computer is helping search space for radio signals etc in the hunt for other life etc...

Well its all very fine and dandy, but personally i think there are better things this power could be spent on... And FOLD (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/) is one of them. The work that is being down goes towards research in fighting Alzheimer's, Cystic Fibrosis, BSE, and many cancers among others.

If there is enough interest from you folk, then (With Mauti's Permission of course) id like to set up the *DAMN Community as a team of FOLD'ers to help this project along. all you need to do is downlaod the screensaver, set up the cofig in your terminal, or run the little app when your not using your comp etc... However it needs a good group of us to do this, and the more people contribute - however small or big, the better. (and of course theres that bit of competition ;) )

Anway... have a look etc before you shoot ;)
Thanks

BFG

yes, why not? i have some old macs at home nobody needs... LC, 7600,... :D

but we could really start a *DAMN Community team. I've thought of a distributed.net team before, but folding@home is as good as any.

Holy damn, looks like its going to take my computer a looooong time to churn through this thing.

Whats the avg. time a packet/protein takes for you BFG?  (ANd what kind of computer are you running it on)

Wow, one hour and .50% later...sweeeeet...

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project?

Well. due to the nature of protins, how much your running the computer it can take days or weeks... . The vairables of how much u run the app, what comp u are running, and the pick of th WU you have will vary hugly.

Im currently working on a lil old protien called p521_BBA5_pf !! - to give you an idea its been running for aprox 90mins - and the computer hasn't been being used (i was getting some breakfast and being lazy ;) )

and progress wise... well we're 2.00% done :) OOh Make that 3.00% :D

(this is on a Duel 1Ghz G4)

GO for it lone-wolf :D

Sounds good Harvey - i was going to do one for our clan etc but then it just seemed that *DAMN has such a larger influence and name etc it would be good to do somthing 'on behalf' of all of us as it were :) And its much better to pool everyone onto one group :D (also means we got a head start with all your guys work :) )

Guess i'll hop onto the team then!

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project?

Rgr.. If i get enough other DAMN members.. I'll switch over the name. Me and eight are realy the only ones that have done anything on it (staict might have done some).. I use the Screen saver sence my g5 and powerbook are on most of the time. The app ver of it seame to reset the projct you are working on everytime you restart the app.. The screen saver works best for me!

Ohh.. and BTW.. if anyone hates the noise that some G5's make (the one that comes from the powersupply sometimes) this app seems to get rid of it.

Just to let you know, the G5's power noises can be turned off by downloading the CHUD tools and un-checking "Nap" in the hardware panel.

..zzzzz....beeep....zzzz....beep got on my nerves for 2 seconds, so yeah, if you haven't done that the G5 gets a lot sexier.

FOLDING project eh? Sounds interesting....

Hey, so i set the *DAMN team id in the preferences window.  But it still shows only four people as being in the team.  (2 DJ Disturbed's, eight and static)  Does the creator need to approve people into the team maybe?

4 hours later, I'm at 33%, christ, this is even slower than compressing video.

I may leave a Dual 1.42 up doing this while I'm on vacation. I figure it's a better use for it than sitting around collecting dust.

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project?
Post by: BTs_Lee.Harvey on May 30, 2004, 11:58:56 am
It will show that you joined once you finish your first folding project.. it automaticaly adds you then... So wait till the first project is done.. check a few hrs after that (or maube a day b/c i dont know how long it takes for it to update on the site) and your SN will be on there.. Make sure you set your SN in the prefs area of the program (or SS) too. Mine is DJDisturbed.. mny powerbook uses the same SN too.. so the DJDisturbed.Powerbook one is actualy inactive.. but its on there o show that some work was done under that name... Dont worrie.. your SN will come up once you have compleated the first "fold"

Alrighty, 10.5% done.  Blah.  My computer must hate me right now, its been running at 100% for about 2 days.  15" 1ghz laptop.

I should be done with this fold in about 8 or 9 days, hopefully.

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project?
Post by: BTs_Mysterio on May 30, 2004, 10:42:13 pm
I've been running for about 6 hours and have got to 11.25% using about 95% of my dual 2 G5....so yea some seem to move slower than others.

I have had a few folds take a few hrs and other take a week for the 1.8 dual G5 to do...... the powerbook (500mhz) finishes one every 3day-10 days.. but then its running the screen saver most of the time b/c all i have been using it for is NF. I have finished close to 200 folds sence around the end of Feb.

Would be cool to find a new project after this one finishes.

Great to see this community come together like that.

I have tried the App ver of Folding and The SS ver of it.. the SS ver of it works the best from what i can tell.... I'm not sure about the command line (terminal) ver of it. I hve my computer set up to not go to sleep (sence i run a kdx server on it) nd the SS runs when ever im not on it... I do put the monitor to sleep after a set amount of time.. but the SS still runs w/ the monitor asleep

Downloaded it yesterday, my comp will work on it every night from now on, mb even during the day aswell soon.

15% in a bit less then 6hrs  ;D with the GUI app. Using between 96 and 99% of my processor with only the regular OS apps running.

Great! Now lets all start a project to take over the world!
Any suggestions Brain? ;)

jk, I hope a lot more ppl will join to help this project.

Is it a stop and go kinda thing? In other words, can I leave it on while I'm at school during the day, but then quit when wanna play rvs, and still have my progress saved?

Hmm, it seems I should read before I type. All figured out. I'm downloading the screen saver one

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BFG on June 04, 2004, 09:03:07 pm
Not totally - but yes it saves as it goes as it were so you don't have to start from scratch - it will revert to the 'last save' - but it does it quite regulally so it isn't much of an issue ive found

Well, I downloaded everything and was going to set it up on a couple of my Pentium 3 test servers at work running full time. Yeah, I know PCs, but that is work. Anyway, the corporate firewall prevented me from downloading the first set of data  >:(. At least I tried!!

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BTs_Lee.Harvey on June 04, 2004, 10:51:20 pm
One Thing I hve noticed in the past.. I used the App first and it too 2 weeks to compleate my first fold.... then i switched to the SS and was doing a fold every day to 4 days...
ALSO....IT YOU PLAN TO USE THE SS AND THE APP.... I WOULD AVISE AGAINST THIS.. EVEN THOUGH THEY WORK ON THE SAME DATA.. THE APP WILL RESET YOUR PROGRESS TO 0% IF YOU SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE 2 PROGRAMS.. This happend when i first was using the SS.. i used the app some to see wich one worked faster.. I went w/ the SS

Are you sure your not just munching away on a sandwich or somthing rather than just a single protien?

Actually, there is a way you can find out.

Set the display to Alpha Trace.  What this does, is it shows you essentially the backbone of the protein.  So, when i say i have an Alpha Trace comrpised of 6 seperate amino acid strings, and 2 AA's that are free floating, i hope you know its a huge bastard.  The screen cant even hold the entire protein at one time, some of it is always hanging off the farking screen.

Im making a leap here, but im guessing that -theoretically- every protein displayed in the ALpha trace could exist on its own, but it doesnt, just because.  So thats why they lump them all into one "protein"

Oh well, 40.25% now, and ive got plenty of time to get this one done (July 5th)  I just hope i get a smaller one next time around!

Damn dude, that sucks!

Well, maybe the credit went to me instead.  Of course it didnt, but i can always hope, cant i?  ;D

Seems they have one or two bugs to work out before the program is flawless, but i dont think we can really complain, id like to see any of us make a program that does this shit =)

I have p639_L939_K12M, so I guess they are very simillar unless you hit the 8 key instead of the 9.
On another note, it's kinda funny how we are comparing proteins, and racing folds.

When they made teams and stuff they should have included ladders. ;)

rolf wolf, how far have you got? I just realised that i never started up the app again after i had to render some film earlier... precious hours wasted damn it!

** BFG whispers sweet nothings as he mops the brow of his Duel G4 as it groans its way through another plate of protien.

Lol BFG

Im not telling =)

Give your G4's hard drive a magnet, it makes them go faster...honest...
(let the Folding@Home sabotage commence!)

To try and cut down on heat, and save my laptop from melting, im removing the keyboard (its attatched via ribbon cable that i have a little wiggle room with) and raising it up on stacks of books and putting a fan underneath it, and its still whirring away with all the fans that it's got.

oh well.  I say again, you all will rue the day that i get a Dual 3ghz machine (im set in the notion that sometime soon, Apple will come out with them)

Im guessing you must be near around 50/55% .... oh god lol which means i have a lot of catching up to do!

put a blanket over it wolf, helps the computer in these chilly nights to keep snug so it can work faster.  And if it gets hot give the processor a drink of water, that always cools me down when im working to hard ;)

Damn it im gonna go work on the laptop so this beasty can get to work :)

ps... now where is that magnet ;)  ;D

ps for those of you that want to track the ladder you can find the top 100 (we are a little way further down ;) here (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teamstats)

Hogging the top spot is Google! They have a total of: 98,396,248 points!!

Post by: c| Lone-Wolf on June 10, 2004, 11:00:19 pm
Im at 55.75% right now =(   However, the weather is getting a lot cooler right now, so i dont feel so bad leaving it on for long periods of time.  Yesterday it topped off at about 90, and for Washington, that is scorching hot.  In Celsius thats right around 32.2 degrees.

Too farking hot for me, so i felt bad for my computer.  I popped off the keyboard and just tapping the heat sink with my finger gave me a second degree burn =P

So now im elevating the computer on books, taking off the keyboard, and having a fan run underneath it, and im debating whether or not i could fill a bag of ice cubes/icewater and put it on the heatsink for a minute or two to cool it off.  I probably wont, but ive had the thought =P

By the way BFG, now you know the ph33r of protein p638_L939_K12M...wuahahaha

Blimey looks like Alice sorry sorry i mean p638_L939_K12M,  has got the better of you! mwhaha :)
Well actually im kinda feeling the wrath to to be honest... i have managed just over 6% so far today... thats with this comp working on it from 8am and its now 10.00pm. 6 freaking percent.

I have the heating turned off in here - the mac is keeping the room toasty warm though... i thought about making some popcorn off the exhaust at the back...

May have something to do with the fact that this PC at work is something along the lines of a Pentium II.....lol.

Lol, i would advise you dont even try to run FAH on a PenII GS...especially if its like the huge-ass protein BFG and I are chewing away on.  (Who else is doing this one? i know someone is)

Im surprised your computer hasnt exploded yet GS.   ;D

Oh and by the way BFG, im at 70% as of about a minute or two ago.  Unfortunately i started at 60% at about 5:00 this morning, and its been running all day...so im tackling about 10% daily, if i leave it running all the time.

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on June 15, 2004, 02:20:03 am
Well, I started that fold at work (I found out it is actually a Pentium III) at 7:00 am today and when I left work at 6:30 pm it was at 2%.  I noticed my G5 at home is working on the same fold, and I started it at 6:30 am, before I left for work.  It is now 7:15 pm and that same fold here on my G5 is at 92%.  So, for all you math wizards out there, just how much faster is my G5 than that piece of crap Pentium III???

So BFG all you need to do is sneak in there and slap FaH on the computers under your SN, and you're set!

Not considering the whole legallity thing (or lack thereof) and the fact that theyd probably haul you off to prison, you'll be the fastest folder on *DAMN! =D

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BTs_Lee.Harvey on June 19, 2004, 11:29:10 pm
It uses both prosesors .. yes.. but if you read some of the faq about it on there web site.. It says that it is not optimised for dual prosesors yet.. but that do tell you a way to run two FaH apps at the same times each using one prosesor a piece.. but I think it only works on the PC side.. They did say that they hope to have it optimised for dual poraessors in the future.. witch will mean it will run even faster on dual prosoessor macs.

*belch* what's that BFG?  Couldnt quite hear you over the this huge-ass fan i had running -all night- to keep the computer cool.

You know what i love about these laptops? you can pop the keyboard off and expose the heat-sinks, RAM, and the metal covers over the processor where all the heat builds up, then point a fan at it and vualla.  Heat problem solved.

I can provide you with a set of military-issue foam earplugs we used in the Air Force when working around jet engines.  I used to use them in college to decrease the sound of a snoring roomate.  I still have a few brand new packs laying around the house.

Uh-oh. BFG.  I think it is preparing to self destruct.

Its done some strange things at me too, like say its "Benchmarking" for about 5%, then went back to "working" once i restarted the program.  Also sat there at zero for a while...

I guess the program isnt quite as well designed as SETI is, but, its still fairly new, and hopefully theyll iron out the glitches as time goes on.  Nice job Brain, im right behind you in the G5 line.

Lets just keep slugging through these packets, no matter if they get dropped/not counted, or not, because every one we do does help the scientific field better understand things, like Alzheimers, Mad Cow Disease, and a host of others.  So just keep that in mind if you do have a huge packet dropped, just do another and be happy to know you might be helping to prevent yourself from becoming a vegetable in your later years.

(No offense to anyone who's had a loved one go through alzheimers, my grandmother did...for 10 years.  I dont mean to offend, just trying to make at least a little humor out of such a depressing subject.)

You may run the risk of fire.. Or if there's a big storm when your gone it may fry. And lest we forget the terrible risk of melting the G5 due to constant over strain on the system...that Folding app is greedy.

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: c| Lone-Wolf on June 23, 2004, 01:31:19 pm
The best part LM, is that right after mine finished, it downloaded another whopper. =(

But, with this heat wave (yes, a heatwave in Washington, amazing isnt it?) over, i should be able to leave my computer running more often, and get this one done faster than the last.

And myst, to answer your question, no there is never an end, because i doubt Stanford will ever run out of proteins to run simulations on, especially because these are like, snapshots of a huge, gigamontreous (?) picture, like, if a protein fold takes milliseconds, each packet is like .001% of that whole fold, so i think we can keep ourselves busy for quite a while with this.

In terms of the thread, hell no, its like the Spam Drop Box, except on a specific subject.

Okay, my G5 started a fold 2 days ago and it is only 38% complete.  Is this one of those 7/2 Folds?  And just how do you tell what kind of fold it is (6/2, 7/2, etc)?  Also, what is the biggest fold?  Is there a 10/2 Fold?

Title: Re:*DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BFG on June 25, 2004, 04:14:03 pm
if you stick to the display on to alpha trace you can see the structure more clearly - the 7/2's that we have been getting recently consist of 7 strands and 2 single nodes (for want of a better word for them) - i think 7/2 is the biggest anyone has come accross so far

Objection on the grounds that no matter how many "noobs" Myst can hire, GhostSniper will always be able to hire more due to superior economic conditions.

In other words:  You can not out-spend GhostSniper.

I did.  I have been continuously folding since we started.  I use both my G5 at home and my Pentium 4 at work to do folds on.  Of course my G5 does folds at twice the rate of the Pentium 4.  ;)

If you don't have the power, why are you sitting around?

I am the Fleet Sales Manager.  That makes me the manager over the Fleet Sales Department.  The Fleet Sales Department is just one of the many departments in an automobile dealership (some of the others include New Car Sales, Used Car Sales, Finance & Insurance, Parts Department, and the Service Department).  So, although I have the power to make changes in my own department, I do not have the power to change the network for the entire dealership (which are all using PC's because Ford's proprietary dealer network systems only work on PC's).  So, until I become the General Manager over the dealership AND when Ford makes their proprietary network for dealers work on macs....I'm just stuck on this fucking PC.

Peace.

.... oh bugger i think ive just got a 8 strander.... its been going for a couple of hours now and its just managed 0.25% lol

The one i just finished had 9, plus, all told 24 more links, in Alpha Trace, that were rather discombobulated.

Of course...then there's my poor 1GHz laptop...struggling away with something of similar size, since as far as F@H is concerned it's the same computer, since i run them both under the same name (Chris54120 if you care)

Anyhow, back to folding!

What kind of computer do you have Brutha?

BTW - BFG, as i write this, my protein is at 99.75%  ;D

w00tage!

Unfortunately my laptop is at about 50%...poor little guy. G5--> ::troesten::  <--1GHz Laptop

thats not fair... i think my Fold is going backwards :(

Post by: c| Lone-Wolf on January 12, 2005, 10:08:56 pm
Lol, that's right BFG.  And they want -YOU-! Ha

Brutha, you should have no trouble with folding proteins pretty quickly.  The proteins in the 1400-1404 (and sometimes a bit higher) range, might take you a good couple hard days folding, because they're enormous, but worth a boatload of points! (That's assuming they submit correctly, which unfortunately for BFG hasnt been happening very much)  :(

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: Brutha on January 14, 2005, 01:50:53 am
Well, it's folding for about 6 hours every day. So it should be doing ok

While attempting to run away from Lone-wolfs randy macs, i was horrified to find that both my strands (the mother of all strands) on both macs have only just got past 20%  ... at this speed (and i kid you not) i won't have finished them till July

Just think, BFG.  When you get a Dual 3, youll be able to chew through proteins of that size in no-time flat!

Patience...grasshoppah...

Yay for projects 720-724, dealing with Alzheimers.  Rather hopeful that completing these will help lead to a cure.  As ive mentioned before, my grandmother was afflicted with the disese for 10 years, so, yeah, take me out back and shoot me when i get that old. =P

Hmm thats a little odd - and for that very reason i don't use the Screan saver - i use the App which i can run and quit when i need or can share some CPU... flies you could take a look at the support forum i believe you can control the program through the terminal - but i would have a look at your activity monitor first and see what process's are running

Never bother with virus apps like this... for that very reason (and the fact im not running Windows XP ;) )

Over the weekend it seems that theyve released a whole new list of projects & descriptions.  Pretty nifty stuff; it looks like the F@H project is becoming more and more of a success, as they arent focusing strictly on protein folding, but starting to branch out as well.

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BFG on February 26, 2005, 01:38:58 pm
Allright F@H is starting to get on my man nipples. First off the beast of a protien that i have been working on for months, the other night decided to stop at 50% and then just cancel itself and get a new protein! Ok now i don't mind becuase i know its done a lot of work etc etc and thats great, but it could have given me some form of recognition on my stats for that bugger! Anway look what my replacment is!!!

That's what having a G5 will do for you  ;)

Has anybody else run into an instance where you select 'Alpha Trace' and all you get is a little blue dot?  Or understands what the heck it means?  Not that it slows my computer down, I'm just curious.

Well this is all manner of funky...

I recently re-formated my 1GHz laptop, and installed the command line version of F@H on it, instead of the GUI.  I have the same name as i do on my G5, but it has me double listed on the stats page (Youll notice 2 Chris54120's on there, the 2nd, lower one being my laptop)

Bummer

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project

im not entirely sure of the problem... it constantly says "benchmarking" and I am not sure what I have to do to get it to start.

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: BFG on May 18, 2005, 10:25:45 pm
well benchmarking can take a long time - especially if you have grabbed a monster. how long has it been saying that for?

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: DarK. on May 19, 2005, 12:53:44 am
actually it says it is at 4% now, so it has started mysteriously :)

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project

it "benchmarks" very long but it's running... after a while it will change to "Working..." tho, no worries.

How many of you have gotten ones that, on Alpha Trace, are just 1 little blue ball floating around all by its lonesome?  Ever since my G5 started working i've gotten more of these kinds of proteins than anything else.

Currently working on: P885_p53dimer8

So if I was to walk into my school when it starts and convince our computer teacher to change all the screensavers on all the computers in the school to this folding project it would be able to start mapping a protein then pick it up later if someone turns the screensaver off then back on again?

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: Civrock on July 21, 2005, 09:07:11 pm
exactly, everytime the SS is on it connects to the F@H server and continues with its work. depensind on how many and how fast computers you have you'll have a pretty good score and rank in our *DAMN folding group (teamnumber is somewhere at the beginning of this thread). you just need to setup your username and our teamnumber in every SS's settings and it'll be counted for your account.

I'm really blown away by this idea and I'm gonna try to get every online community I have ever been a part of involved... even the Xbox live forums *cringes*... hey they're PC whores and mac bashers but if their comps can help fight cancer why not ask em?

Title: Re: *DAMN Community FOLDING Project
Post by: Lone @ Wor on July 21, 2005, 09:25:08 pm
It doesnt help to fight cancer, unfortunately, but the work does go towards curing some other diseases that arent viral or bacterial.  Alzheimers, and I believe Parkinsons disease are two of the bigger ones that could, in time, be solved by F@H.

Cheers foolios

If you are using the screensaver it doesn't show a percent you need the graphical client to get that screen.

if you look at bottom on SS.. you will see a green bar that shows how far you got.. once it reaches the right side of screen(inbetween the logos) its done

i believe folding for Jesus has been and gone mate. The Romans set up a large colosseum of abacus's and found him pretty quickly.... good for the romans (bad for him!)
