Title: MWSF '06
Post by: Civrock on December 30, 2005, 04:31:57 am
Yeah, this is the (early) thread for the coming Macworld in San Francisco, starting on January 10th 2006. :)

---

My first comment to this event: Apple is going to hold press conferences at all Apple HQs all over the world... Cupertino, Munich, etc... on January 13th, to 'demonstrate' the new products which were announced at the MWSF '06. ;)

I predict steve throwing another camera this year. That and iLife apps crashing in the OSX x86 demo.

Odds on in rumor world that we'll be seeing the intel ibook (6 months earlier than originally thought) ..

Id kinda love to see something completley new - like the rumored mac mini media centre! :D

Pippin was Apple's first

noo you don't say ? Just that it wasn't distributed by Apple nor sold anywhere else than in Asia.
So you can say that it doesn't "exist"

Don't sass me. ::domina:: Pippin was distributed in the US in 1996, and regardless of who produced it, it ran Mac OS and was Apple designed. More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin

The "iHome" will likely debut as well as MWSF usually brings completely new products... and Apple is out of new iPod types.... Just hope for HDMI or at least DVI out.

I want an Apple TiVo kinda media center... in the form of a Mac mini maybe, DVR... connectable to the actual Mac of course. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

They would need to implement OSX in a dashboard like way instead of TV into OSX.

Mactels will mess around with the mac gaming market for sure,

euw enough allready!! Poor iNaru!

My 12" PB 1Ghz is now looking decidedly old... quite asside from my 'power house' desktop which is going to get the shit kicked out of it by a measly imac!! the powerbook still excels in what it was meant to do though, GS think of it this way - if tomorrow you woke up and had no laptop would it matter? if yes then its not worthless - its valuable to you!!

ps... thanks civic, i've been wanting to know what the url for apples website was for years ;)

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BFG on January 10, 2006, 11:02:40 pm
If you look at the 'graphics' section of the new imac on the apple website, its all 'games games games' ... more so than the past... and with an X1600 ATI 256MB graphics card in... its pretty damn inpressive.

When we start seeing new games coming out for mac-intel... it looks like they are going to be absolutly screaming - and the want for people to load up windowz to play games isn't going to be a factor if porting becomes easier (ie not having to support PPC anymore plus middleware support)

kinda interesting that Aspyr have had to get a lot of middleware for PC sorted out in their port of Civilisation4 for mac - some they have had to licence, some they have had to make their own versions off... but i think news like that boads very well for mac gaming in general! :D

So don't jump ship for Mac Gaming.. i think the futures looking pretty good!!

great news about ATIs X1800 though! :D

It's the usual downgrader for <10.4 users... they released one with every new QT update since 7.0.2. The problem I had was caused by an iChat tool called ShowMacster and the developer ensured me that there'd be an update ASAP.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BFG on January 11, 2006, 04:27:15 pm
Apparently they pulled the update, replaced it with a downgrader, then reposted the update (don't know if the repost was an updated updater if that make sense... well it would make sense if it was!)

agreed GS. - It won't stay like that though - as i said in other thread i think its due to the new motherboard being made for apple by intel not being ready - so the off the shelf pc board dosn't have either... at a guess!

regarding gaming and Intel macs... from glenda adams:

Quote
For the first time, Apple’s boxes will finally have matching hardware specs with PCs, eliminating any reason for the current game performance discrepancy between the Windows and Mac platforms. The move to Intel sets the bar higher for Apple technicians and for developers to really push the boxes to get the same frame rates as PC users. The new Macs are also garnering a lot of attention from PC users, and if speculation of Apple’s market share growing past the 10% prove correct, Glenda expects to see many more gaming titles coming to the platform.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 14, 2006, 11:10:29 pm
Glenda was the worst pessimist prior to this move. I guess the WoW demo won her over.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: Civrock on January 15, 2006, 12:19:20 am
And the fact that you can pretty much forget about playing (I mean not just being able to start it... I also mean competitive performance) Windows games on an Intel-Macs in the near future, if ever. Being able to install Windows on it or even support for the GPU is not everything, there are many more aspects... and looking at the great performance of games on Intel-Macs now, there'll be MANY more top games coming to the Mac (as a few companies announced already), making Windows and any hacks needless.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BFG on January 15, 2006, 12:46:53 pm
thought this was interesting:

Quote
Glenda noted that the ports of Call of Duty 2 and Civilization 4 are progressing well, while the release of Quake 4, currently listed as being at Alpha, may hinge on openGL optimizations expected in an upcoming operating system update

Apple really needs to pull its finger out when it comes to OpenGL - when you look at the 2.0Spec apple needs to do some catching up and help push things foward on the OS.

Civic which other aspects where you thinking off? If VPC has GPU support then thats the biggest problem gone. networking etc is not an issue with VPC at the moment. what did you mean by  'other aspects'?

even if it has GPU support it won't be that fast, it still need to take more CPU power to make for example a game work. But overall the system will have a performance boost.. Somewhat.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 15, 2006, 06:36:56 pm
Why is it you are acting so damned stupid ethion? The emulation was slow due to two things:

  • No GPU Support
  • Non-x86 Processor requiring total code emulation

Incase you aren't paying attention the GPU emulation is the only one of those points that would still cause a slow down, but now the processor can be directly accessed by the VPC framework. There would be no damned slow down more than the 5% to make the OS 'go'. If Microsoft can make the Graphics Drivers aware of the Apple firmware on the GPU, then it will work at near native [90+%]. BIOS or EFI it won't matter if MS can get to the chip directly. Don't think that they don't want to, they want all the sales they can get and VPC being decent would ensure no lost revenue as Apple marketshare expands slowly.

Title: Re: MWSF '06
Post by: BFG on January 15, 2006, 06:56:59 pm
Keep it cool headed please myst, valid comments etc but dont pull out the flamethrower thanks.

Ethion, the biggest problem with VPC before as Myst has pointed out was that a complete emulation had to take place for X86 code to run on a PPC processor. The intel chips remove that problem and that quite simply means that it isn't a theoretical 'somewhat' performance boost - its a major factor and can mean major speed increases... in fact we should be actually just discussing which areas where it will be being slowed down, not speeded up.

As i understand it the next version of VPC is being rebuilt from the ground up and isn't going to be around for quite a while- but there is a lot of work going into it between apple and ms

Comment from: Ken Leibman [Visitor]
False alarm? Because they used the same directors to create a commercial that's almost a carbon copy of the Post Office video? Still looks like a first-class alarm to me. First of all, creative people in the ad business are often "inspired" by videos and films. But they don't just go out and copy them outright like this. The fact that they used the same directors is completely beside the point. It's just not original, period -- and that's not up to the Apple standards of greatness.
When we are on the subject of copying stuff, I agree completely with this comment made on the cult of mac blog.
The add makes the apple moto "think different" ludicrous.

Do you criticize the 1984 commercial for it being based off a book and movie with only minor changes also? Apple has done this before.

Didn't like the ad much to start with - felt pretty unoriginal and not really like it was hitting its target.

... liked it a whole lot less after seeing the comparison with the other ad heh.

They can't even get pre-builds of Vista to run, although it's supporting EFI. Apple chose not to install certain parts which'd make it easier and more compatible.
