Title: Isn't iPod Photo a bit silly?
Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on February 13, 2005, 06:44:22 am
With the new Mac Mini out for $499, isn't it kind of stupid for anyone to buy an iPod Photo for $499?  I mean, let's get real here, a mac mini can be every bit the portable hard drive that the iPod Photo is, plus you get a whole computer to boot!  Just seems crazy to me that anybody would buy an iPod Photo.  Or is it just me?

it was just as crazy when they introduced the iPod mini... the 3 times as big normal iPod was only $50 more.

Hrm... bringing my mac mini to school instead of a laptop for the keynote presentations? Brilliant!

I completely agree with you GS... why buy an iPod when you can buy a nice computer for the same price.

Apple forgot to give the Mac mini slots for batteries. ;D

I hate the fact it has a power brick...doesn't it?

Yeah, they couldn't fit a power supply in there with everything else, so the Mac Mini has an external one.  But hell, that is still a lot of bang for the buck.

- There is no way they could have put it inside the mini - think of the heat those power bricks generate - i wouldn't want that near my ram, and CPU!

... Hmm ok so if you offered me 499 to spend on either a mac mini or a ipod photo, well yeah i woud go for the Mac Mini - but it depends what u need/want.  - if your a music lover who does a lot of digital photography - taking one of these ipod mini's with a flash card reader is a perfect accessory for storing your images wherever you are.   allright its not a huge market and i doubt it will be as popular as the mini - but its surprising how much people adopt them, ive a friend with a PC who recently got a iPod photo and he loves it - im allways being shown his latest photos etc whenever i see him - and its pretty cool! :)

I used a iPod photo before and found ti entertaining, but jesus, it just is useless. they need belkin or Griffen to make a camera via dock connector.

Ipod Photo and mac mini are completely different, you cant compare them.

Ipod Photo and mac mini are completely different, you cant compare them.

They are both the same price.  And they both have a hard drive to store things on.  With one you get just a hard drive, with a small screen to view your pictures on...with the other you get a hard drive, a PowerPC G4 CPU, RAM that is upgradable, a graphics card, hell, a computer.  Sorry, but they are comparable.  I just think the iPod Photo is a waste of money...I have an opinion, and I enjoy expressing my opinion.

THe only prob about takeing the mac mini is that you also have to take some sort of screen to see things on with it, a mouse, and if you want to type anything... a kayboard.. Thats the only draw back about the mini vs and ipod photo.for the portability issue. Yes the computer cost that same price.. but when you add in the additional cost of a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard (b/c non of these things come with it) you will still be spendng about 300-800  more then what you will pay for a ipod photo.

No, what I was getting at is that you can take the Mac Mini around like a little portable computer...and just plug it in to whatever mouse, keyboard, and monitor is available where you take it.  So, say I take mine to work...I just plug it in to my PC monitor, keyboard, and mouse and go with it.  Or same with taking it to a friend's house, or wherever.  Sure, you couldn't just start using it while sitting on a park bench like a laptop, or even the iPod Photo, but still...the uses for it I think are far better than for the iPod Photo.  Hell, I wouldn't even be saying this if the iPod Photo were say, $150 CHEAPER.  But that's my point, how can you justify paying the same price for a portable hard drive as for a COMPUTER!

I think you are comparing apples and oranges. If you need a small big photostorage in your pocked it's perfect(together with a photocam connector). People buy it for what it is, they don't want a Mac mini, because they can't use it for their tasks.

Of course it is an expensive gadget even if the new iPod updates are a bit cheaper, but nevertheless it has functions that no Mac mini can fullfill.

You remind me when I discussed with my mom that I want a very expensive trial bike and she always told me that for the same money I could get a used car. Well I didn't need the car, I needed a trial bike even if I could get a car for the same money.

Bye,

Mauti
ps: last but not least it is still a mobile mp3 player ;)

Maybe you're right Mauti...I've just never seen much usefulness in portable computers and portable gadgets like the iPod in general.  Don't know if it's just the fact that I've never needed one, or just never really travel enough...or maybe it's just that I've always had a computer at home and at work.  I did have a PowerBook once...but it was a 2300 Duo with a Duo Dock.  So I would take it to work as a portable, then when I got home it slipped in the Duo Dock and became my desktop computer.  Maybe if Apple brought that back out I would consider it.

Anyways, I think it just struck me as odd that Apple was charging $500 for that iPod Photo...when they just released a desktop computer for the same price.  I really do think it's overpriced.

Docks would be very easy to implement again. With todays technology and some classic apple innovation they could even add a processor to the dock.

I think some 3rd party companies alreay make a dock like gadget for the newer powerbooks.. I know i saw it somewhere.

It's cause anyone silly enough to buy a 500 dollar iPod are the same ones who upgrade their G5s everytime they are upgraded.

The new iPod Photo is still a great improvement. 1 cord uploads via USB on the fly is good. I hate when the camera gets filled.
