Title: Age Of Empires III Coming to mac.! (and what about havok?)
Post by: BFG on August 10, 2006, 01:10:15 am
Ok so Destineer/macsoft are bringing AOE3 to the mac - great news, sounds like a cracking game and going by the screenshots and vids it is graphicly stunning.

But there is somthing a wee bit more inportant for me that i noticed... AOE 3 Uses the havok engine. yeah, havok engine as used in games such as GhR2 HL2 and RvS Lockdown etc...

So i can't help but think... GhR3 running on Intel macs under OSX? ;)

No; Macsoft has pulled havok out of the game and replaced it with Ageia.

I wonder if AoE 3 is going to come to Gameranger, it says the game is due for release by the end of September.  There hasn't been a new game on GR in awhile and since AoE 2 is probably one of GR's most popular games AoE 3 would certainly draw a huge crowd.  I also wonder if the game is going to be compatible with PC users.

There is two big reasons for aoe2 being the game that's played most on GR.

• Theres cracks everywhere, and it's a game you can get free

• It has it's low requirements, and as many dont have Intel macs or big G5's then the activity is high.

I'm not saying Aoe2 is a bad game, i liked it when i played it 3-4 years ago. But if a new game will pop up with such low requirements and it would be cheap or free to get then im sure you would see a lot of people playing.

Do you think the technology will ever come so far as the requirements go down instead of up.  There was a recent thread about something like that somewhere, where they can achieve amazing graphics with relatively low requirements.

Am I correct in saying, Ghr3 runs on AGEIA also?

I donnno, I think if GhR 3 came to Mac it would be with Cider and Intel only.

No shade i don't, but that was exactly my point.

Mac is expensive, and most mac users doesn't use their macs for gaming.
I just gave u the reasons why AOE2 is the most game played on GameRanger atm.

We have a small community, and it'll be kept as a small community unless more people buy macs and wants to play on them, a mac computer is expensive and if you ask a person i'm more than 110% sure that if he would but a computer for gaming then it would be a PC.

I myself wish that 10.000 people would buy a mac and begin to play on GR so we could get some activity and more action.

That would be a miracle  ;)

Ghost Recon 3 actually uses both Ageia and Havok. The Havok stuff is a lot less significant though. I believe it was added very early in the game development, and later they switched to Ageia for everything else.

Game Ranger could sure use some promotion. I mean with about 0.6 Million [half of 1.3M macs sold were new users] buying Macs las quarter, it would stand to reason GR shouldn't be decreasing in activity. And for some reason I doubt only about 200 people bought RvS or 500 people bought GhR; there a big discrepency in how many people are buying games and how many are using GR. Aspyr should add mutliplayer-matchmaking services to their "Gamer Hood" project so that more casual gamers get involved when they buy a game.

Punisher  my friend has this game, and he would LAN with another buddy on the hall.  I'm pretty sure it uses an online browser for non  LAN but don't quote me on it.
