Title: Halo? Yay or Nay?
Post by: c| Lone-Wolf on January 07, 2004, 10:09:33 pm
This might have been decided upon earlier and i didnt see it, if so, feel free to lock it.

Anyhow, just wondering if anyone has decided conclusively that there weill or will not be a Halo ladder in the upcomming season.  Just asking, so ill know if i need to start focusing more on RvS.

Just along this note, has anyone else noticed that it seems that mac Halo players cant play against PCs?  Again, maybe i missed it, but i thought Bungie was going to make it possible to play against Macs & PCs?  Who knows, anyhow, thanks for answering.

Lone, as you might have seen or heard earlier, its hard to have a ladder for a game that Gameranger does not support. Although it could be worked around, the games that thrive on GR are best for ladders. As of now i dont see Halo being put on GR (for some weird reason) but until it does, i doubt a ladder will be formed. Focus on RvS if i were you so u all can keep up with KoS. :)

Alrighty, that makes sense, no gripes from me.  Thanks for the input.  Though i shall mourn the lack of a Halo ladder...life will go on.  RvS here I come!

I think it is possible, all that has to be scheduled can be done through gameranger, and i think it would be great.  I vote yay!

Reasons it can't be done:

1. It's not gameranger supported.
2. All the people who play Halo also play either GhR or RvS so it would be as inactive as the AA ladder.
3. Games without GR support don't get attention they need. The living example: America's Army.

like hazard said...

It would be fantastic to play Halo multiplayer games 'clan' v 'clan' but i don't see it hapening within damn... A shame as i think the multiplayer would be so so much more fun if some team play was brought in!

A a great shame... but i think its not a bright future :(

Well the only thing you would need is a good server with not much lag.

Also the reason why we cant play against pc yet is because they released a patch when the mac version was released so we first need to wait untill the update is released for mac. Now oyu cna only play with pc players if they dont have that update.

the only other problem of course is that there is absolutly zip in the way of anti cheat protection. Im not aware if the pc has punkbuster or equivelent but ive come accros several 'dodgey' characters who have been invinsible/ able to levitate/ able to hop the map et, able to fire rockets about as twice as fast as they should etc.......

Mind u there is not cheat protection for GhR and we certainly survive  ;)

Halo would probably be slightly more successful than America's Army.  It may actually have 1 CB in a season.

I wasnt talking about the inclusion of a Halo ladder to *DAMN, i see exactly why it wouldnt work and im fine with it, i was just looking forward to having thousands more people to play when the Mac & PC versions of Halo can play each other =D

Yeah that would be awsome... I really look forward to being able to play in some proper team games - where people aren't just out for the kills but to actually win a game (ie in CTF!) that would be nice... teamwork...

Hazard u missed one very important point....no-one can host in America's Army, you have to buy or set up a server.  In Halo anyone who wants to play can host and join a game, it can be private or public, etc.  Halo has a almost built in version of gameranger....just without the chat.  All that has to be arranged for a cb can be done through gameranger, and then someone hosts it and the rest join.

I have seen Halo clans on but I have seen no friendly matches of any kind. I haven't seen any halo games advertised in a while so ya, it can't be done. I don't think there is enough clans for it anyway.

Yes, i agree with BFg there on that one.  The cheating is seriously bad in Halo.  If they had punkbuster for that game then it would be more of an idea to put it on a ladder.  and since for the moment there is not, it would create too much turmoil within the DAMN BL community to have a game like that.

Another issue for Halo is the fact that it plays a lot like Quake III.  It seems that there is not much reality to the game other then the fact of the vehicles (which are sweet by the way ;)   )   As for the rest of the game I dont think it would fit into the style of gameplay that DAMN is used to associating with.  Dont get me wrong, it's a blast to play, especially with the weapons and vehicles, but the many issues presented above will always be an issue when it comes to having it on a clan ladder.  :(

:MoD:Saberian

By the way Hazard, love the icon, great show heh.

I played Halo for the first time on Mac and I like it I think it's an interesting new fps. although you do have to have a rather high end computer to run it, still is a great game.

The chance to see Halo on the *DAMN BL isn't that low. Not for season 7 but may season 8 will have a Halo ladder because I think it allows great teamplay while not being only yet another Quake or UT clone. However I haven't played it in mp yet so my knowledge is only from Halo Mac reviews.

Bye,

I don't understand where everyone is coming from? When you open up Halo, it gives you the option to play in a window! So you can set up on GR and play in the window. Another thing is, it gives you the choice of how fast you want to play 30fps, VSYNC, or just SYNC. Also, you choose the speed of your internet connection.  For example, if someone has 56k and can host, they can onlyhave 2 people play, and it is exponitial growth from there for internt.  I play c|lightwave a lot in Halo, and we use his airport, DSL connect and it runs well if he is in the Airport Base Station range.  Now, if you actually messed around in the option window at start up or go into the settings and look around, you might be able to change your opinion. I wish I had a better computer than my iBook...

The game plays fine, though I'm not a big fan of it.

The real problem lies in drumming up enough support IN ONE PLACE.

Since Halo players wont congregate on GameRanger, like they do with the R6 games, it will be much the same as AA.  In AA, you can set any AA server up in your favorites and join from GR, but you have to get the clans together, a few of them at least.  Even with the official AA forums, not enough interest was drummed up for a single CB last season.

Why (seriously, I am asking) would Halo be any different?  If there aren't 4 or 5 clans really committed to playing it (above other games) how can a ladder work?  After the 4 or 5, you can get a few more that play multiple games, but you need a core of clans that will actually CB and look for CB's.

So the chances of a MP Halo game against another clan might happen, my gut feeling is it will be another AA though... the lack of GR support just makes 'meeting and greeting' that more difficult.

Will there be a Halo ladder?
I think enough people play it for there to be a Ladder. Heck theres even a halo clan (SE).

one clan isnt enough to have a ladder running. it?d be the same like last season with AA... the only real AA clan was -a2-, the ladder was completely inactive. we?ll see if something happens this season.
my opinion is that games which are not supported by GameRanger have no real chance to have an active ladder.

isnt there a rumour though which says Halo will get GameRanger support with its next update?

The difference between AA and Halo is that in Halo, the everyday player like you and me can host, thus making cb's possible.

I know there are plenty of people in c| that would play on the Halo ladder.  So that's at least 2 clans.

Well, all in all if there was a Halo tournament I would sign up :MoD: for it just because the game is a blast, even though it is more like Quake III in a sense then RvS or GhR.  In either event it is true that it has good ability to have a good team oriented game, and with the vehicles it makes it even better for some good team play.  Although Punkbuster should be introduced to the scene cause there is still the cheating issues that are already aparrent on the regular servers.

Oh we would certainly play... hell maybe if there is enough guys up for it we could try out an 'unofficial' few cb's?? c| if your up for it or anyone else i know we @ :MoD: have at least four or five guys who would be more than keen..

perhaps CTF games, best of three games.....

So far we have 3, and once i get ahold of Doc, that should make 4.  If you guys want 5, im sure we can find someone =D

The next question is a server...anyone have a server capable of hosting a 4v4 or 5v5?  *looks over in Bucc's direction*   ;D ;D
