Title: signature
Post by: SAR(VoLaTile) on August 15, 2004, 11:30:41 am
Uhh, I had a signature that showed my stats for americas army... it had a black background color...and now instead of that it says pictures arent alowed as signatures. I really dont see how thats a picture, it was just a small black background color, errr....|n| gen billy has the same signature as that except bigger, and I see people with signatures that are sentences but huge and in color so someone tell me how it is possible that mine isnt allowed? Doesn't make sense to me

Billy's has been probably simply overlooked because he doesn't post very often... i'm sure it'll be edited also, or he can do it after reading this himself.

AA stats count as pictures i'd say... it's definitely not text (what i think is the only allowed at the moment). their size is by far bigger than the size of normal text... besides that it absolutely looks like a picture cuz of the black background.

You can make it without a background.. .

If in safari press alt + command + A and check the size of the AA signature.. . 8kb.. . 10 times less than many peoples animated avatars.

yes, i know that they are not nearly as big as some avatars... but that's the rules here at the moment. anything bigger than text in the signatures is not allowed, until Mauti updates this forum to Simple Machines (which, i heard, is almost finished by the developers) and can enable/disable some signature options.

I repeat my booing. Tastefully small images wouldn't bother anyone.

apart from cluttering up the forum which people use for talking not as gallerys, slowing down load times and the strain on the server, oh and just being annoying.

I never personally found 50x80 annoying.

Guys you know that as soon only 1 guy has a pic in his signature, everyone wants one as well, and we can't check everyone's signature pic size and file size, that's the point. I wouldn't care about the duck or Myst's 50*80 pic, but I also know as soon as this starts we get tons of new unnecessary problems with guys that add 0.5 MB signatures, different gifs, alls sizes...

That's my point, so we stay with our strict no sig pic policy, beside that you can still add your own avatar.

Bye,

Mauti

hmm, is there any way in the new SMF forum system to restrict images in signatures just like you can with the avatars (optical size and file size)?

No, you just use the image tags... so you have every freedom you want to add them and we tons of work to control them.

the problem is that you can't check the filesize of a picture programmatically without loading it. So even a hack that could check pic sizes in signatures or of avatars would have to load the pic, then check the size, so the problem concerning the high load times wouldn't be solved.

hmm, in the forum z][t uses i can set the file size the avatars of the members can have.

yeah, but they have to upload the avatar first, don't they?

you can also make an image smaller with the html <img> tag, but the filesize would stay the same...

I've been on forums with 500x500+ signature picts, and didn't see much speed difference.

And was the forum as active/used as much as this one? were they using the same forum board? is their server the same as *DAMN's? My point being it varies for different people on different forums....

signatures dont affect the speed of this forum at all because the images are not hosted on this server. they are getting loaded from the webspace of the signature image user.
it's the connections of the members that are too slow if it starts lagging when a signature need to be loaded, or it's the slow webspace the sig image is on. the speed of the forum itself doesnt get affected at all.

therefore in case of speed... signature images, linked images in general, only affect people with slow connections. and if it's really that bad (or you simply dont like them), the forum gives a possibility to disable showing signature images of other users. ::)
