Title: Putting the Bad Word in for Ventrilo.
Post by: :MoD:Shade on April 06, 2005, 09:41:41 pm
Ok, this is after my yearlong battle with Flagship (creator of Ventrilo).

I've given up on it, told him that we needed his product years ago but he failed to do anything about it.  He constantly neglects the Mac community and only see's his view of things.  I may have been mean at some times but there was a reason for that.  I even posted a link to the "Idiots guide to Macintosh" for him - tried to help but he didn't want that,  ;).

I would rather fork over $50 to Scott Kevill than wait for this dipshit to port Ventrilo.  I think Scott would be more open for changes to things and he (unlike flag) is actually working on improvements.

Well I won't be needing Ventrilo anymore anyways since I rarely come on now so that's why I've given up.  Probably nobody gives a fuck but I had to get that off my chest.

Your not the only one who feels the neglect. GoAmericasArmy.com, the Official website for purchasing servers for AAO has completely dropped Ventrilo and has gone with another VoIP called Combat Net Radio. Im not sure if they have a mac version buy it may be worth taking a look.

I just want anything to replace NF. NF is shitty as hardware progresses and conflict with it increases.

Hey Myst, have you guys tried KDX at all??
I realize its basically a hyper Netphone, but for us, the imporovements were SUBSTANTIAL.

Mainly being that each user is not required to serve to each other...
Downside is that someone needs to be the server..but the UPside is that the bandwidth req's went way down for each user, and I noticed a definite improvement in bullet lag issues with RVS.

The heaviest bandwidth usage is dealt to the server.
Any mac will run it, and not nearly as cpu intensive as Skype.

And yes, as with NF there is a registration, but those of us that truly want tech improvements are willing to a pay a little to play - cant warez ourselves into a well-developed, well supported tech environment...right?

Try it and let me know your thoughts...

I've tried it before and found it underpowered and not useful to me. Especially seeing as you can't send sound files in the same way. It just wasn't as slick as NF, I think someone will make a replacement eventually.

Teamspeak is risking a growing market by letting ventrilo get out first.

i doubt team-speak is exactly desperate to corner the mac market...

Some how I doubt they want a ventrilo take over, of course they must be feeling their fate as the big companies move in on the computer illiterate with their own VOIP. Either way they must worry about gaming too, I mean would you rather play a game on the console it's designed for? or a box with blue screen surprises?

Am i right in thinking Team-speak is going to loose all of the AA servers etc as everyone will end up using the AA built in voice capabilities especially when the UT3 engine arrives?

I don't trust built-in voce systems. Either way, they can't be run when in other applications pre-game so thats also a loss.

It was, "In Development" for years and now it might be "Pending release" for just as long.

You should research further. If you look at the mac threads, you'll see that up until this year he was struggling to learn OSX (and he had a lemon mac). I believe that this will be released within... hrm.... 3 months. (he's been developing both mac/linux/pc clients at the same time).

Sorry Shiex. unless a new version of KDX has been released recently it is still client to client. not client to server. Yes someone can host a server and there are sripts to connect automatically but it is still client to client.

Sorry for double post. I guess im the one thats wrong.

KDX is like a swiss army knife for internet and intranet communications. KDX is a powerful multi-OS "BBS"-style (Bulletin Board System) encrypted internet communications system that provides voice chat (Internet Telephone), text chat, messaging, news, file and folder transfer, remote access, trackers and more. It uses strong encryption to protect your communications for security and privacy. It is very useful for groups that need to collaborate on a project via the Internet. It is also very useful for remote administration of a computer. KDX uses a client/server architecture (NOT peer-to-peer).

I would expect that client to server to boost the performance substantially.

Are Ventrilo and Teamspeak both Client/Client or Client/Server option?

A vent/TS server runs the server program and all your clients run the client program connecting to the server. Cuts way down in banwith consumption and overall performance.
