Title: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!

Ghost Recon 2 is dead, Long Live Ghost Recon!

"This decision was not an easy one.

We did not want to disappoint the loyal Ghost Recon fans, but we did not want to risk releasing a final product that did not meet their high expectations. With the launch of Ghost Recon 3 planned for Winter 2005, significant human resources were needed to ensure the quality of the future instalment of the series, thus potentially jeopardizing the quality of either Ghost Recon 2 PC or Ghost Recon 3. Taking into account their close release dates, and the fact that we felt the third opus would be a much more satisfying and evolved gaming experience, we were forced to conclude that it was in the interest of gamers for us to cancel the PC version of Ghost Recon 2. But Ghost Recon 3 on PC will hit shelves the fourth quarter of 2005, so the wait won’t be long, and will definitely be worth it."

Sorry for the bad news, folks. I am happy to know that there is commitment to GR3 PC.

heh, what shall i say to that... everybody saw it coming once Ghost Recon 3 got announced. people complained that Ghost Recon 2 would of sucked on the PC because its 3rd person view and i personally hope GhR 3 will be back to the first person view that everyone wants.
and the 3rd person/over the shoulder view wasn't the only reason it sucked on consoles already... it is a linear arcadey POS. far from the tactical realism that we all know and love in GhR 1.

unfortunately of course, no word about a Mac-Version yet. and also, i hope they drop the HAVOC engine, which has no Mac-support, and use something more Mac-friendly. <dreaming> maybe even a PC/Mac-Version release at the same time, heh... like First To Fight. </dreaming>

i wouldn't really bet on anything about the GhR 3 release, though... UBI has alot of work to do in proving to the PC crowd that they still know what we want, though it's obvious that they have somewhat of a clue because they knew to drop the GhR 2 release, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up until i see some solid information on the release of Ghost Recon 3.

COME ON UBISOFT! :)

No way they're going to bail on the HAVOK engine.  Ive never touched a game that's based on it, but something tells me that it's going to be a major player in the game engine scene for a long time.  Add into that the fact that GhR 2's dev. team is already used to HAVOK, I dont see a reason why they would touch anything else, unless someone puts a gun to their collective heads.

If memory serves, wasnt Valve asking something like 1 million from the mac company that ported HAVOK?  Bah, is all i have to say.

Lone im not sure - doesn't it depend a bit on what they decide about the Game engine - if i remember rightly GhR2 is running a heavily modified and updated version of the original GhR Game engine (which was built to spec)  ... If if they moved to a licened engine say just as an example the UT2004 engine then they'd not need the likes of havok.

.... that said i think your probably right lone - given the fact they have used it before - and because it is just what you need for a game like GhR then im guessing they'll be using it....

GhR 2 ran on a super modded version of the GhR engine?  I thought it ran on Havok.  Huh, well, i stand corrected then.

It would be lovely if they used an engine that already exists Mac side, but i guess all we can do is hope. (And look angry looks at Valve for having such an outrageous asking price for Havok)

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: BFG on April 12, 2005, 10:48:37 am
Aah to different things there mate.  the Havok engine is a physics engine and thats very different from a full game engine, you still need your game engine for everything else :) So your Havok engine can make your characters fall over realistically - your jeep fly through the air properly etc, but you need your Game engine to provide the environment for it to happen in - the ground for the jeep to land on etc.

Well fine then, i stand -doubly- correctly.  Geeze BFG, you nitpicker. ;)

Anyway, now all has been made clear to me.  Thank ya.

hehe sorry mate, just spreading the love pain geek knowledge type thingy ;)

Thinking about games for a moment etc though... i was just looking at up-and-coming releases for the Mac and its pretty damn shocking! Yes there is Close Combat First to fight / Red Phoenix.. and Black Hawk Down Team Sabre (dosn't really count as an addon) and there is the Sims2 in the distance... but apart from that there really isn't any "big games" that we know about that are coming this way -  Doom has just arrived which is great  but given just how many games are coming out for the PC all the time,  the current list of notable games expected for mac in 2005 is about 15  ... thats pretty damn shocking.

if i'd only be a millionaire... i'd buy that fucker (aka HAVOC license) and donate it to the mac company, just to get us Ghost Recon 3 for Mac. ;)

Is anything at all actually known about GhR3 other than the aproximate release date  ... its so soon im kinda guessing that its going to be running the same graphics engine, same havok reliance, same lack of appearance on mac.

probably... but according to the announcement they're going to improve quite a few things that got really bad critics from gamers and possibly add something totally new also. i'm personally pretty sure that they'll go back to the first-person view... the third-person view in GhR2 was a big "bite into the toilet" (Griff ins Klo), as we use to say here. ;)

If GhR3 uses UE3 (Unreal Engine 3 : Already being developed on both mac and PC simultaneously) then it will use the physics built right into the new UE.

Also good news for this community about UE3 & GhR3 for mac is that the developer tools for UE3 are also going to be ported... also already started. This means that we will be able to do some amazing things with the game unlike prior games.

GhR3 won't use UE3. to be more exact, no game will until approximately 2007.

Not true civic, UE3 is likely to be out in early 06. Several games are already under development under the engine. However, no GhR3 won't be UE3. Unfortunately that means we may have havok problems with it too.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!

well they would like you to use it:

If you're starting on a forward-looking title aimed at upcoming next-generation consoles and 2006 PC's, then Unreal Engine 3 is for you. Its core subsystems have been architected from the ground up for upcoming consoles and DirectX9 PC's, to take maximum advantage of shader programs, per-pixel lighting and shadowing, multithreading, and next-generation content creation tools.

... But i really doubt GhR3 will be utilizing it.. would be nice but i doubt it.

You left out the best part BFG. It can run on high on a NVIDIA 6600GT. Meaning good news for those let down by Quake 4 being so very hardware demanding.

They are the same thing.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!

Erm no i believe they are two very very different... um Doom3 exists - and i believe the QIIII name was given out to someone else (Raven?)  and they are making Quake4 - which coincidently is based on the Doom3 engine.

Quake 4=Doom3 engines. We were talking engines here. How disappointing, you forgot proper roman numerals. It's QIV.

well im just lazy.

Quake IV will be using the DoomIII engine but is not being developed by ID (I think its Raven) - when you said 'the same thing' i thought you were refering to the same game, not the same engine! :)

At least try ;)

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: pointillist on April 28, 2005, 07:02:45 pm
I agree....the market is being divided for future products
down the road, i think and damn the current market (heh heh).
The time is right....that is to say there's a huge vacuum and i think the
q3 will be the engine.

And i can Imagine a better engine i.e. where gravity and air density
are fluid variables.........and one where Explosive force is actually
demonstrated.......nothing compares to a newsreel, and there's No reason
for that to be true....the engine should be Better than reality....

The task would seem to be to write an engine version that is mac-patible.
Then the game makers will come.  Ditto profit.  Apple claims they have
a good record with Developers......many here in the glass valley figure
they got to develop products that were only marginally profitable, only
to see them incorporated into later apple barrels........

Have you checked out Garage Games?  The games Suck but they provide
an engine.  Could an improved Physics Program be plugged into an
already available modifiable engine?  To strike fast, I mean....

When I met Clancy he was Waaaaay cool...but he said that might not
trickle down.  I met the Garage Games guy and he was Very nice....
wanted to see everything anybody could think of.....i think they're
frustrated tho....saw him at a party and he looked tired.
But that's good for Us.

Quake 3 is already dead. Quake 4 is a engine suffering worse than UE2. Currently from what anyone knows UE3 (due early early 2006) is to be the one to beat... if possible.

Im saying the 9800 to the X800 is what the 6800 (ultra) is to the GT version. The 6600 is a X600-X700 level competitor.

Maybe this means Rainbow Six 4 won't use havok either?

I'm praying for one more Mac generation using AGP 8X (remember the 16X of PCIe hasn't been taken advantage or even 4X AGP so the mac manufactures/chip designers could theoretically choose to keep the 8X interface.)

Post by: Civrock on July 07, 2005, 05:26:06 pm
What differences can we expect between the PC and the Consoles versions?

There will be many differences both versions, and many of theme are induced by the simple fact that both are very different. For instance, if you take into account that you control your soldier with a keyboard and a mouse rather than with a pad, you know that you will shoot faster and more accurately. For us, that means that we have to adapt the level design (offer more covers), the camera system (immersive first person view), the difficulty (enemies are more challenging)… Basically nearly all areas of the game have to be adapted just considering this simple fact.

In the PC version of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, we will develop the tactical aspect further than in the other versions, because this approach best fits this platform, and we know that all Ghost Recon fans are expecting to be able to plan their team’s actions on the battlefield.

That’s why we are implementing exclusive features for the Tactical Map of the game. With this tool, the planning phase can now happen at anytime in the game (at least when you’re safe enough!). That also means that you’ll be able to change your plans if things do not go as planned, just like real soldiers do. We feel this is an ideal balance between strategy and improvisation.

Also the PC version will provide many other improvements and tweaks to make it fit the expectations of our audience.

Can you please explain us the main differences between the first opus of Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter?

Actually, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter has a lot in common with the features that the fans loved in the first opus, the features from a tactical shooter. We have however improved and increased these tactical features, taking advantage of the technology that the soldiers of the future will use.

The other big difference is of course the visual quality which will benefit from the latest Next Gen PC rendering and effect.

Finally, multiplayer expands towards new modes which also take advantage of our new tactical layer and near futuristic context.

A lot of people have been upset with very little information on the upcoming PC-based Tom Clancy games. Have you in any way listened to the input and wishes of fans when doing Tom Clancy’s GHOST RECON Advanced Warfighter?

Because we do not express ourselves on the forums does not mean that we don’t read them. We know what the expectations are, and our objective remains to provide a deep and involving game. We are still debating many aspects of the game, and the opinions expressed by the fans are always taken in consideration.

For example on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2, feedbacks from the PC community revealed that the “Over the shoulder” view was not appreciated. So on the PC version of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, we decided to stick to a first person view during the whole game.

One of the strongest points of Ghost Recon was the multiplayer mode. Which possibilities will be available to players and what improvements have been made?

This is an area we cannot really talk about right now, because it is still heavily under work right now, and because we do not want to spoil everything. However, we can already tell you that all the basics you can expect from an online shooter will be here plus most of the classical modes associated with the Ghost Recon brand. But we will also provide we will also propose some great innovative modes which will fully exploit the tactical layer of the game and the near futuristic context.

After reading the recent Game Informer magazine article on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for XBox 360, I have to say I am very excited about it. There will be NO load times and it will be a seamless experience from start to finish of war infested Mexico City. From the looks of it, you will be able to use multiple techniques that will make the single player experience with A.I. much better. A.I. will now react to enemy fire and grenades, (A.I. as in your teammates, and your enemies) finding cover when necessary, the warfighter gear will give you cameras from their view, and you will be able to use air strikes and helicopter views to give you an edge. Bag all that with the most realistic physics engine ever devised, and you've got one hell of a game.

I don't know much of anything about how the multiplayer experience will be, but I imagine smooth 60 FPS immersive battles in HD. I also don't know how much of the whole warfighter aspect will exist online.

All in all, I still can't believe this game is coming out THIS YEAR!

no i missed it tucked up down there hiding away... a few thoughts

• Ooo um very 'consoley' feel (yeah ok its on a console no surprises there) but the firing looks horribly 'spray and pray' and pretty inaccurate with the clunky rets ...

• the body physics - Character animation and movment... fantastic.

• Nice to see some decent gun kick and some gurt big muzzle flashes ;)

• detail in the maps - awesome

• all things flying and those explosives... wow  ;D

as i've read in another Q&A for the PC-version the in-game interface will be much different, not consoley at all and in 1st-person view, since a PC is not a console. ;) just all available trailers are from the xbox version so far.

But where is that thick luscious long waist high grass you could crawl through in GHR2? where are those beautiful swaying tree's, the thick gorse bush's and babbling brooks that make this game so fantastic? It all feels so damn Urban, and not much stealth this looks like the marines not the bush boys.

I need forests, streams, little huts. I need swaying trees, long rushes and swamps. I need fog and mist, (ok actually i just want english weather ;) )

In stead im smelling Americas Army Raven Shield and First to fight.

yeah i really hope it wont be all urban. there are so many urban games out there already. looking at the positive side - there must be some sort of vegetation outside a city! give me trees, grass and bushes!

can't wait anyhow  :)

the single player mode will be there, but i bet many other maps will be in the area AROUND mexico city, with grass and woods and bushes etc. especially the multiplayer stuff, they cancelled GhR2 for PC only because it didn't met the expectations of the community, the GhR1 people. GhR3 is supposed to be closer to GhR1 than GhR2 was, because it's on PC and not console anyway.

Civic, they always say they try to be closer to the best game in the series. Look at RvS, it was supposed to be more on the R6 level but fucked that up. The chances are against GhR 3. For the record GhR3 is covering the following platforms:

-PS2
-XBOX
-PC
-X360

Making it one of the most compromising games to debut on so many different consoles while maintaining a PC version [supposedly]. It is safe to say that GhR is the console series that Tom Clancy Games is using to make a console game of the year with. I look forward to it on my X360... hopefully it will look better and run better when I get it to the PS3.

Neo was at the Games Convention in Germany last weekend and GhR3 for Xbox and PC got presented there. He talked with the press guy and he said that it'll probably come for Mac, but not before late next year because development hasn't even started yet. It's not going to use Havok in a way that'd make it necessary, it's only an addition so PC users who don't have AGEIA can have good graphics, too. It's built with AGEIA which is cross-platform, unlike HAVOK, and isn't nearly as expensive to license. I'm pretty sure Aspyr is going to port it, just a matter of time.

I don't see any mention of Mac there, then again, I didn't really expect to, but it sure looks cool.

"Will there be simulated physics? If so which engine, and how will the flight of the bullet be handled?"

"Yes, there are actually 2 physical engines integrated in the game, Havok and Novodex. The bullet simulation will be as close to realism as possible (such as passing through thin surface or trees), but not at the expense of the gameplay feeling."

Hmmmm does that mean Mac machines won't be able to run it with Havok in the picture?? boooooo

I did a bit of comparison of GhR:AW specs to other PC specs so we can gather what mac requirements may be. I'll just quote said post:

Quote
How would releasing GhR 3 Solve anything [in response to some who have been mentioning it as a solution]. First and foremost the minimum requirements of GR:AW PC.

  • A Pentium 4 ~2Ghz or the equivalent (2.8Ghz recommended)
  • 512MB RAM (1024Mb recommended)
  • DirectX: DirectX9.0c
  • Video Card: Shader 2.0 card with 128 MB of VRAM (256MB recommended)
  • Sound card: DirectX9 compatible sound card

To compare that to say, Doom 3:
  • A 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500
  • 384 MB RAM
  • An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better [64 VRAM]

Now you may think the difference is marginal, but those are the minimum requirements, bare minimum is more like it. One of the only things keeping GhR going right now is people getting bad FPS in Raven Shield, which minimum requirements look something like this on the PC side:

  • 800 MHz Pentium® III, AMD Athlon, or equivalent
  • 128 MB RAM (XP users: 256 MB RAM required)
  • 32 MB DirectX 8 compatible 3D video card with hardware T&L ***(supported chipsets listed below)
  • DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
  • DirectX 8.1 or higher (DX9 included on the disc)

[and civic, just read page one and you missed UE3 game launches by about a year... though I may eat my words there if the mac port hits slow spots]

"Good luck playing a FPS game with a console controller" by the mr man of the joka

Are you serious? Lot's of FPS players are on consoles. theres a whole community of halo, halo 2, killzone, the socom series, and tons more that are available on console and people compete w/o the help of a mouse and keyboard. In fact I remember my n64 days of playing Doom, the Turok series, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Rainbow 6, Quake 2, and other releases in multiplayer action. If your opponents have a controller then all is fair.

It's ridiculous with the aiming and auto-aim in console FPS', though... doesn't take nearly as much skill. Plus, there's no keyboard.

And then you move the cursor around with your little joystick... yay. FPS are simply not meant to be played with controllers, they're only this popular because of the relatively cheap price of consoles and because of the popularity of the genre.

Post by: [a] ferret on February 08, 2006, 07:34:46 am
of course, i mean you just listed quite possibly the 2 most reason why games are sold on any platform. People will buy games and play games on any media that they find easy to use or whatever they can based on even an economic reason. Do you think a majority of kids under the age of 12 are going to ask their parents for a reasonably priced PC to install and play games on? no..... thomas down the road has blah blah game on playstation 2 and he wants to play THAT game with him. Multiplayer gaming on consoles is usually the first experience for a majority of people who are just entering the gaming field (not counting all the dumb java poker games that older people are getting into). I say take it anyway you can get it. There's nothing wrong with serious multiplayer gaming on consoles and people have the right to choose what platform they want to compete on. just ask the guys over here at http://socom3.gamebattles.com/

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: Ethion on February 08, 2006, 09:24:57 am
First of all, auto-aim has almost been able to be deactivated in FPS games, and it isn't that hard as it seems.

And games and consoles aren't that relativly cheap either, an Xbox360 costs alot of money, and so does the games. The so called "current" gen is cheap.

And it's a different experience playing them online rather on PC/Mac. And now when it's HD, it looks soo much better, and you can almost say that you are put into the game.

And for GRAW, I'd rather play it on a X360 and don't get any framerate problems, as probably most people will have on their PC/Macs. And I will be able to play it on high-res HD, while you are playing it on 1024 or what not.

still the xbox360 which is about 300 vs a gaming pc that can range from 1200 to 1800 is a pretty big step. as a parent buying for their child, i would be pretty much sold on an xbox360. sorry to continue with this off-topic conversation, this will be my last post regarding this issue.....   to sum it all up.. if i have the chance to play ghr3 on an xbox..i wont mind playing a fps with a controller.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: Toxic::Joka on February 08, 2006, 11:58:50 am
I guess it's a matter of what kind gaming experience you prefer. Sure, Gold Eye and Perfect Dark was the bomb back in the days when you didn't know of any alternatives. I'm sure GRAW on Xbox360 can be fun occasionally.

Personally I prefer the tactical and competitive aspect of computer games, that's not possible on a console as long as you control the character with a toy.  ;)

But each to his own.  ::beer::

Tigah, sure. Do you have Xfire? You can find my account in my signature.  :)

Have you tried the X360 Joka?

I do agree with you, people dislikes and likes different things. But I have to tell you guys, FPS on a console is pretty good, if you count GameCube and PS2 out that is. And on the toy part, gaming computers are also toys, and you can use gamepads and shit like that on them too.

CoD2 MP is awesome on the X360, if it wasn't for the lag(a bug). And I'm guessing that GRAW will be even  bigger. And what do you mean by occasionally? :P Do you think computer games are fun occasionally too ?

Consoles can have some good FPS, but the most are shit, like most PC/Mac FPS. I just hope those with the XBOX360s realize that there will be a HD-DVD version that will cost more or an external drive for it in the near[ish] future as MS chose to rush it to the market with 8GB disks only. 'Only'. you ask? Well, quit literally most games were 700 MBs a few years back, then 1GB at say C&C:G, and now 4GB+ with the newer games. Sony made the right choice on perfecting their product to release it before it melts discs. But overall, the thing is that Macs and PC are upgradeable over time, and can do one hell of a lot more than play games/movies/music. Hell, they don't even have web browsing or email on the X360 [ PS3 has web].

You want to talk about HD?! The vast majority of the games for X360 are 720p, which is 1280 x 720. That isn't an impressive resolution for detail compared to PCs or Macs. When they offer more 1080i [though the 1080p PS3s can do is much better] which are 1920x1080, I will be more interested. A TV that can display a HD signal are usually 36" or over [I've seen 27s (non-wide) and 32s, but rarely] which makes 1280 x 720 sound like a terrible resolution.

Now let me state I'm not anti-X360, as I own one, but let's not make them sound like gods - they simply aren't and will not continue to be at the same level as PCs in 2-3 years.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: Ethion on February 09, 2006, 02:26:30 pm
I'm not trying to make the X360 sound like it's the best gaming device ever, but it's designed to played on, not to search the web on. As for e-mail, i'm guessing that they will add hotmail support anytime(blah).

And they aren't using the dvd-disc fully anyway, as most people thought.
http://www.gaming-360.com/?p=179

And, Sony is releasing new information that differes all the time from what they said before. They haven't even released accurate specs yet, from that I know.

As for HD, i'm fully aware of that the games doesn't do 1080i. And Microsoft and ATI is saying different things, ATI is saying that it does support 1080i while Microsoft is saying otherwise.

But as you said, PC/Macs are upgradable, console aren't.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: BTs_Mysterio on February 09, 2006, 08:42:26 pm
Games will increase size faster because the resolution increases. That's something consoles didn't really worry about. If they want to continue offering the same quality of games and not add more detail to characters, make longer missions, and overall be stuck where the XBOX1 is now; then DVD is fine.

Sony myths are caused by internet forums, not the company. If you read the Data sheet and watched the PS3 Keynote, you would find the specs easy to know. There's no doubt in anyone's mind, besides those who love the X360, that the Cell is the superior processor for a specific task - exactly what gaming is.

I doubt we will see easy use of Internet or Email with X360 simply because they chose not to include bluetooth, which means people may have to buy an external module that MS will have to provide drivers for. Sounds almost as bad a PS2's online garbage.

Also I have seen software where you can stream audio and photo's from your mac to the 360

I recommend both. It's not like Mac/PC because different console get different games. It's rare that even 2 under the same title are the same when it's two different consoles. The X360 is loud, but you can't hear it from any distance when you have sound on and are not sitting within 5 feet of it.

The first GhR 3 PC Trailer came out a few days ago, check it here:

And is it just me or does it look like even the computer that it's runing on can bearly play it, maybe it's just my Quicktime going slower.

Wow, I'm speechless.  Taking the physics part away from the graphics card and having it be done on a completly seperate card is much much better and performance i imagine will be better as well.

I am not all  that surprised that UBI has completely fucked up the PC side of GhR. I would just give up on all Ubisoft games now as to avoid future disappointment.

Well the 360 version gots excellent reviews, and for true feedback I wouldn't take a 10 posts long thread from a onmac forum. Head over to http://www.ghostrecon.net/ or http://ghostrecon.3dretreat.com/ and take a look at this 23 pages long demo review thread: http://www.ghostrecon.net/

There the reviews are quite good, but it seems the game is very demanding.

I tried it a few days ago, and here is my verdict.

The game starts out nicely with powerful developer-logos bouncing on and off the screen, followed by the familiar Ghost Recon logo. Then the intro starts. The intro is not a prerendered movie, but is actual gamegraphics. Your team of ghosts are in a helicopter flying over Mexico city....LOADS of buldings can be seen through the windows of the chopper. After the briefing the chopper descends into the streets of the city and you jump out, ready for combat. At this point I was very excited, almost aroused. Then I took control of my dude moving along the edges of a building. Hmmmm...doesnt this feel like something I played before...hmmmm...yeah it does! It feels like............Raven Shield! Bah booooooo. I played a little more, but the handling was just not like the old Ghost Recon that we all love more than our families. Graphics and gunsounds are cool, very demanding for your machine...dont expect 60 fps here. But sadly the game is not Ghost Recon anymore. Im sure its a great game if you get into it, but it might as well have been called something else. So for my part...Im not gonna play the game at all, at least not now. AA is still better in my book.

Break my heart and shit in my skull i hoped for so much and it sounds like once again they have failed to capture what really made the original such a fantastic game.

when it came to player handling GhR beat RvS on every count.

... and RS beat GhR.

Statistically, the older the better. Maybe we should all learn to make our own game... not shitty stuff like the major devs these days.

Where are they going wrong? Are they just more concerned with playability or is it a case of everything shifting towards 'arcade mode' as they push for sales to casual gamers etc?

I don't understand the inability to take GhR and bring its Graphics up to date. Ok adjustments to other things but the fundamental stuff worked, its what made GHR so poopular!

GhR series has become consoley (simplified) while the RS series has become arcadey. These people don't know what they are doing. The games won't sell like halo because any idiot can play them; now they're just an average FPS.

Rgr i've got to agree with you there Myst. I think its why more of us are playing AA now. Your average simplified arcade FPS comes 10 to the dozen, but FPS Mil Sim type games, well it ain't a bit list.

I'm surprised more gamers don't follow in the path of Tactical Ops (whatever they call it now). That mod was great when it came out for UT and changed the gameplay so much. I'm gonna learn that type of stuff sometime, I'm sure its easy... enough.

I am almost in full agreeance with Magnetic.  I got my intel mac about a week ago.  Immediately I picked up BF2.  I really am enjoying this game.  The only thing this game lacks is more control of the player ...for example leaning.  You cant peek around corners!!  And maybe less hits with your gun to kill somebody would be nice.  Internal stat tracking, rewards, medals and promotions make this game a winner...plus the graphics are amazing, and it runs great on the intel mac.

Now being a Ghost Recon guy...I had to go out and get my hands on GhR Adv WF.   :::-/::  So far all I see is better graphics. And as far as being like RvS....i'm not really sure about that.  Although firing a gun is about the same...with the gun jumps and all....it feels like your walking with cement shoes on. To be honest, I only played the game for about an hour so far, but I have not been immediately sucked in as I was with the original.  And yes it seems to be a bit more demanding than even BF2 on the mac.  Seems to be a bit slow....maybe there are some tweaks that I will need to make like w/ RvS.  I am hoping it will get better with time, after all I hated Rvs when I first played it, and it became one of my favorites.

I'll try to add some more feedback after I give it a few more goes. We've been yapping about it back and forth in our forum.  Currently Me Cottonmouth and Weak have intels, but weak is too mexican to get his going.  http://thechosenones.us/smf/index.php ::wall::

Oh yeah...when I installed GhR3 it also installed a program called X-Fire & Gamespy arena.  X-fire seems to be the pc version of GR....the only thing is all my peeps are not there 8(.

I played GhR original a few times on my MBP and it seemed to run the same as on my G5 iMac, as did RvS and CoD.  I did not play for any signifigant length of time, but the few maps I played were good to go.

Tried out GhR3 again for a little bit last night.  I'm not sure, but I think I like it.  I wish all my peeps were playing it as well, so we could chat about it while playing.  Gonna try some more tonight....I could see this game being alot more tactical than I originally thought.  Also the reality of it is that at first it may seem a bit slow(movement), but I think it is just more realistic that's all.  After all who really moves as fast as the guys in GhR1 while aiming and running?  Warzone in the original version made the game. I am going to have to check out the different game modes that come stock, but remember WZ came out long after the game was being played. THere is some potential here possibly....I hope its not just new game excitement....I will have to really give this thing a go over.  More feedback to follow.

Cell, I have played GRAW on the 360, and the big difference between the single player mode and the multiplayer are the graphics. It seems that the multiplayer mode graphics are less impressive than single player mode (actualy ugly and jagged).  Is this the same for the pc version ?
Also, you guys really don't know the meaning of the word camping until you played GRAW multi on the 360.

I found this nice review, which pretty much sums it up...happy reading.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter

After playing this game, I must admit I booted up the original Ghost Recon because I didn't remember it playing like GRAW, and in fact I was right.

GRAW takes a different route to the original Ghost Recon, and in fact feels far more simplistic, however unlike another Tom Clancy title, Rainbow 6, the gameplay doesnt suffer too greatly as a result

The president has been kidnapped, you must save him (well duh). In most computer games the story is just a mild diversion from the action, and it is no different in GRAW, however it does keep you guessing as to what happens next and while most of the core story is told to you via satelite uplink while your on a helicopter flying to another mission point it does make it rather exciting. Though the premise of the story borders on illogical and to put quite frankly, impossible.

However, story aside, I must mention my disatisfaction of GRAW's gameplay. It feels consolified, despite the extra month in development over the xbox 360 version the game still plays very much like a console game, that is its rather simple and the intense situations feel rather superficial as it mainly involves shooting at many enemies while dodging bullets, werein in the original the tense moments were created by putting you in a vulnrable situation were you wouldnt know if what you were planning out would quite workout as you hope.

The game uses a uplink system which helps you identify friend from foe, this replaces the heartbeat sensor back in the original GR and is far more effective than the heartbeat sensor, you usually see were the enemy is as they often are tagged with a red diamond, unlike the original
GR were you only have a general idea of the enemies wereabouts

The waypoint system is back, albeit very simplistically, this is in no small part due to the games linearity and the fact there are less ghosts on your team. The original Ghost Recon allowed you to take up to 8 other Ghosts with you on missions in different units, and were deployed in largely non-linear levels allowing for interesting tactics to develop while on the run. In GRAW the waypoint system is only good for one thing: making your squad see the enemy so you can issue the 'attack' command.

You can also pickup ammo from dead enemy soldiers, this couldnt be done in the original GR and takes away yet another part of the game, to add insult to injury picking up weapons involves you walking over the weapon thats on the ground, so much for military simulation Laughing

You also on some levels get the aid of a drone, which helps you see were the enemy are by tagging them, however its illogical you only get them in some leves as they are very useful, however whats more illogical is the fact that you can use the satellite uplink to see the enemy from above, yet they dont nessasarily get/are tagged with the red diamonds that help you find them. One would think an elite bunch of soldiers out to save the president would in fact have an army of people back at HQ constantly looking at the sattelite picture and tagging the enemies for the soldiers on the ground, and helping them with their plans. This can be forgiven as the game would in fact be too simple if all the enemies were tagged though it does make it feel somewhat 'gamey'.

What absoloutely CANNOT BE forgiven by any real GR fan is the damage model, you can take heaps of punishment and still fight efficeintly and effectively, while in the previous game if you were shot in the leg the soldiers movement speed would have been impeded it doesnt occur here, which is both good and bad, good for newcomeres who like action, bad for GR vets who liked the original for this. You can also get shotup quite a bit and still live, there is alot of intense fighting going on, werein the original the idea was to sneak round a corner pop off an enemy and go back into hiding, this without anyone seeing you, in this game it is replaced by firing, taking cover, firing some more, while being shot at the whole time. I even recall one very gamey moment were I was firing at a bunch of soldiers when tehre was another bad guy right next to me who was firing at me from point blank, I only noticed him after I finished with everyone infront of me, THIS ISNT QUAKE PEOPLE! I'm SUPPOSED TO DIE IF I GET SHOT 10 TIMES AT POINT BLANK RANGE!

To compensate for the lack of squadmates and the hitmodel you cannot hot switch players like in the original, your stuck to your character, captain mitchel.

HOwever the game isnt without its merits, the graphics are exceptional though not at Oblvion's level and the squad AI is magnificent. In this game your team is in fact a deadly weapon, and tehres no denying it, they fight hard and well, they take cover, move with caution and fight the enemy in what could be considered a realistic manner. There are some inconsistencies, like giving them the order to attack may sometimes result in a 'I dont have a shot sir', though you are being shot at by a clearly visible foe, since your squad mate is looking the other way he doesnt give a hoot.

Its slightly saddening this doesnt extend to the enemy, on medium level they have a habit (on some occasions) to shoot at you completely exposed, however this isnt often, and given the AI in this game is perhaps the best I have ever seen its hardly noticeable.

The physics employed in the game is a step above what we have seen in Half-life 2 and Doom 3 and rightly so, its the first game to support a PPU. The physics do affect how you play but not as much as half-life 2 (ie there is no gravity gun Tongue).

There are some nice touches to the game, when running around you kick cans and stuff and its always also nice to see parts of your body from first person perspective ala FEAR (not that there is a third person perspective).

Unlike the paltry Rainbow 6: Lockdown, the massive change in gameplay focus doesnt ruin the game, however just like Lockdown it takes away a lot of what fans have loved about the original. Its a good game, make no mistake, but perhaps it should not have been called Ghost Recon.

To be honest, I probably ended up playing the physics hardware demo that came with the game more than the game itself, die Hard fans will hate it, new comers will love it.

Post by: Cell on May 11, 2006, 04:28:33 pm
Yeah...well I tried again last night.....didn't notice jagged graphics at all, and I have mine turned down all the way in MP....the Imac duo core is not the ideal machine for running this game, but it does the job.  Plus low graphics still look great in GHR ADV WF.  I have not noticed being able to  fight on after getting shot. I have been dying pretty quickly   :o . I also like the way the better you do in combat, the more weapon options are available for you.  Some of the other details are a bit much, but in the long run a few modifications and game types, and this game could be rocking.  I will have to see when I get good at the game, and really understand it if I will agree with that review that mag posted - especially the part about - "die Hard fans will hate it, new comers will love it."

Game on!   If any of you guys are playing either GHR3 or BF2...leave me your user names so I can try and find you out there.

That is very upsetting, that was quite possibly one of the better parts to GhR is the fact that it was nearly one shot-one-kill which makes it that much more difficult.

Why change something like that.

I guess mate because 90% couldn't shoot for shit and needed a full magazine at 5 paces just to wound the enemy... ok a slight exageration but you get the drift ;)

Consolified for the masses... rip GHR

After further review...I've noticed that this game is real close to "1 shot 1 kill"....I know this because I was getting teabagged on a reglar basis at first.  It doesn't take much to kill your enemy.  Just a single or few well placed shots. Starting to get the feel for it.

It looks like there will be a Map Editor coming out soon according to the Ghost Recon website:

"Starting in June, UBISOFT and developer GRIN will release brand new multiplayer modes, including:
Deathmatch mode, Map Editor for Deathmatch and Domination, anti-cheat fixes, Anti Aliasing feature, and New co-op maps
Throughout the summer:
Team Deathmatch, Hamburger Hill modes, Original GR co-op mode, Map editor for TDM, HH, OGR co-op, GRAW co-op improvement (quick start and respawn) and Dedicated Server pack"

I hope its something like IGOR was for Ghost Recon 1 so people can create their own missions and maps, that would be nice if we could actually make Warzone for this game and be able to build new maps.  I would love to be able to convert my Ghr 1 maps.  I know most of the original Ghost Recon 1 maps were converted so people could play them in Ghr 2, I hope something similar is able to be done with this game so the original Ghr maps can be playable.

Supposedly there was a concern about lost FPS; they proved false. As this technology expands, games will be able to apply it better – I expect UT2k7 to be the one to make the big difference important.

I just just ordered a copy of GRAW, so I am still at noob status, Cell plays a lot so watch your back for that sneaky bastard!   My MBP is being sent back to apple due to extreme over heating (way worse than my old 17"PB), a terribley loud whine when the processors are idle, and the optical drive shit the bed. These all seem to be wide spread problems on the early MBPs.
Anyway ... Pun, you are gonna love the MBP, with the exception of these issues I'm having, the MBP is so damn fast. I run Final Cut at work most of the day, than come home and bootcamp into windows for my gaming fix!! See ya on GRAW soon!

The computer is supposed to come on Friday according to the tracking info, I already bought GRAW for the PC, I will probably have to buy Windows XP though because I don't want a pirated version.

I get a free ipod nano with the education rebate apple has going now woohoo  ;D

Whats the service people play GRAW on?  Is it "The Zone" or "X Fire"?  Is it like gameranger where you can just host your own room and limit to how many people you want to join?  Also do they have free voice communication?

I think they use X-fire, but since I haven't had anyone to really play with, I haven't messed with X-fire much.  I have just been joining through the in-game server browser.  We'll figure  something out.  From first glance, X-fire seems like a advanced version of GR.  I saved about $100 on XP by buying an OEM version at Microcenter.

A tutorial has been released that shows how to build your own landscapes and objects for the map editor.  Now its just a matter of time until people start building the original Ghr maps for this game.  I hope the next update released for this game allows people to create their own missions so "Warzone" could actually be made.

Any news on the map editor - how advanced is it in terms of features and details? some map editors have been pretty basic it would be nice if things are along the lines of the UT map editors.

I think one of the problems with the original GhR was that it just felt gimmicky with the limited guns, set up kits, and Grenade Launchers. If they made the game a more complete game that is coherent off a console then perhaps it will be good. Then again there's always R6:6 and errr... those other games... which PC users a;ways brag about having... that are good... like... ?

The GRAW map editor lets you take a flat piece of ground and then place objects\buildings already in the game for use on your map.
For example there's a group of objects/buildings called "Industrial", you could build an "Industrial" style map using the objects and buildings available in that set.  The neat thing about this is that the Map Editor is built into the game so anybody could use it without downloading special 3D Software.

Now that they released a tutorial on how to model your own terrains and objects for the game you could almost build anything, although it requires the expensive 3D App "3DS Max 7" in order to make your own stuff.

a few good servers:

ATTACKFORCEZ - http://www.attackforcez.com

Shadow Company Elite - http://www.shadowcompanyelite.com

They both have stat tracking.  I think you have to register on thier site first.  Some of these PC guys are pretty damn good.  In other servers that don't run anti-cheat, I wonder sometimes.  But it still doesn't compare to the "community" of GR.  8(  F'n PC bitches

GRAW PC Map Pack #2

Today we're releasing more information about the GRAW PC Map Pack #2. See below for 2 screenshots, each detailing a new game mode that will be added with the map pack. Additionally, this map pack will implement the death cam, a feature showing you how you died and who shot you, and allowing you to see the game through the remaining players. This pack is still in development, aiming for a release at the end of July or beginning of August.

That would be excellent......I need some of my mac minded buddies to play with.  All I can tell you is that we will rukkus.  I have now got it running on 1024 x 768 medium texture mostly everything else turned down, and I get a consistent 30 -50 fps now.  If you liked the original (barely the same game) and you liked RvS (similarities exist) you will really like this game.  This could really be fun if it was brought to the *DAMN/GR community.  Tactically it could be so much fun.  I'm really loving the game now.  Only one I play.

People are starting to make custom maps fro GRAW and remakes of original GhR maps.  First 2 out are POW camp and Red Square.  I don't think they have nailed them yet, but its a start. I would love to see Embassy, Castle and Stronghold in GRAW.  Would be f'n sick.

Downloaded the demo since USPS sucks bawls.

I really like it, it's definitly not old school GhR but it's cerrtainly not overly "Arcadish" or "Consolified" in my opinion.

My complaint is it has such high requirements, even my brand new computer struggles at 20 - 30 FPS in single player.  Almost makes me want a PC just to stick a Ageia PhysiX card in there to see the amazing physics.

Title: Re: GhR 2 PC-Version CANCELLED - GhR 3 announced!
Post by: Cell on July 31, 2006, 05:28:59 pm
The physics look great, but to get the game running nice.....start with the lowest graphics settings...@ 1024x768.  Make sure you go to http://www.fraps.com and dl and install that.  Lets you take ss's, videos, and shows fps on any game you run.  THen you can start turning up different graphics settings until you find the balance of look & feel your comfortable with.  Plus, from what I heard, the demo runs a bit slower than the full version.

The multiplayer itself is not arcady or consoly at all.  It has a RvS like feel, but it does take getting used to.  YOu can't run and gun, and you can't run and scope.  Basically when you run, your gun goes down.  I would sy RvS like....much bigger maps for the most part, and the  GhR stealth that we all love.

I love you a little less you lil bastard. and there's that sexy G5 iMac getting all lonly now.

Quick question.... with the mention of old maps being ported, whats the deal with vegitation and trees? Everything i saw of GhR3 was buildings and Embassy style maps - how does the POW camp turn out - what are the bush's like, can someone port river with the little gurgling stream and the trees and bushes and little huts oh god please where is GHR4?

I've played one map and it's urban, I have a feeling thoes bushes that you so wonderfully loved are lost in the world of classic GhR.

It breaks my freaking heart it really does, the whole point of GhR is that you were a small team of ghosts who did surgical insurtions got the job done and got out... not the bloody marines in full blown battles... what happend to stealth and sneakyness?

Whats a sneaky bush lovin bugger like me meant to play now? Heck it looks like AA 2.7 is going to have better veg and be more close to GhR than GhR3 is!

Actually . . .

I think you'll find that urban warfare CAN be much more tactical, the reason? , because there are so many more angles to cover.  The enemy can be up in this window, down that alley, behind that car, in the park.  Just playing Single Player gives me a sense that this can be one hell of a game on Ventrilo with a squad of say, 4 guys, the tactics that could be used would be so much fun.  I have a feeling that unlike GhR where squads split up straight out of the spawnsite I think that because the maps are so HUGE and urban that it's going to be more beneficial for a small squad to stick together.

We'll see though, BFG you need to get your hands on a PC ;)

dudes....there are plenty of bushes trees...rocks etc.....  little streams..running water......if you play the campaign you will see it......as the patches come out more maps from the campaigns & new ones all together are being included. Also new gametypes.  don't be so sceptical ...this is not the GhR2 piece of shit you think it is. Exactly that shade...smaller squads are better off sticking together and covering each others' asses.  This game is very tactical...especially when the spawns are dropped to 0.  BFG...if your not stealthy in this game...your dead....fast.

I'm so bummed about this game so far.  Granted I haven't given it nearly enough time but so far, IT TAKES SO MANY FUCKING SHOTS TO KILL SOMEONE!!!

And domination is just run around like a little chicken until you see someone and then practically bump into them before shooting.

The reticule does NOTHING, it comes in SO SLOW and isn't even a good indication as to where your bullets are.

ARRRRRRRRRRRGH.

They just released another MapPack for this game with 4 new maps and other new updates.  Original Ghr fans will be pleased to hear they now added the Death Cam, being able to watch through the eyes of your remaining teammates when you are dead.  At least its good to know they are releasing new MapPacks and improving the game. ::applause::

Are we playing the same game here?  Limb shots take a few...head chest 1 - 3 max.  Use the SCAR - H...packs a wallop.

Yes ...at first you will tend to do that...until you figure out the maps, and the style of play....I also hated this game at first...as I hated RvS at first.  Just takes getting used to.  Need to get comfortable and learn the maps.  If it was just comfy and easy at first you'd love it at first, and hate it after a little while.  Expect the opposite.

Ubisoft Seek GR:AW MP Pack 3 Beta Testers

Quote
GRAW Fans,

Over the last two months we delivered two free and exclusive multiplayer packs for GRAW PC that included Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Hamburger Hill modes. In the UBISOFT tradition of taking the game experience even further, we are happy to offer one final multiplayer pack for the Ghost Recon community.

We would like to give you the opportunity to be part of our beta test expected to start end of August. On that occasion and during one week you will have the opportunity to be the first ones to test the new and most awaited Siege mode, take part to the Original GR coop. mode and use the all new console admin tools. Last but not least, your feedbacks and comments will help us finalize the MP pack 3 and will ensure that the GRAW multiplayer experience is taken one step further.

As a beta tester, we expect you to both judge GRAW MP PACK 3 technically as well as qualitatively and to explore all modes and features. Be the ones that show the most interest and dedication to this beta-test and win exclusive GR goodies.

To register, you must fill in this questionnaire: http://websurveyor.net/wsb.dll/15991/graw_beta_mp3.htm
Selected testers will be contacted with full instructions prior to the launch of the beta.

Awesome their adding siege to multiplayer!  It says its the last multiplayer mp update though :(  I just hope they put a mission editior in there so people can create their own multiplayer gametypes.  If this is the last mp update maybe they will start doing seperate expansion packs like Island Thunder was for Ghr1.
