Title: Moderators
Post by: Typhy on August 13, 2003, 10:19:26 am
I'd just like to hear an explaination from the GG moderators as to why the "BTs Tactics" topic.

That should've been moved to a private forum right away, without question.

Explaination?

The timeframe for that thread is sometime from August 12th to August 13th(today) 8 P.M. Not everyone checks these forums everyday. Besides the damage it was intended to do was done as soon as the first person read it, not to mention I think if Xaiver really wanted it posted he would host it at his own forums and advertise it, but then again I am not a GG mod, but then again either are you.  ;)

Although I can understand your points, when the damage was done doesn't matter at all, it still should've been moved or deleted as soon as a moderator read it.

The "they don't always log on" excuse doesn't work, because two moderators ( Brain and Ace ) posted early in the thread.

you're right, i should have locked it, but i thought that i might be able to perhaps turn it around  get everyone to apologize and let it die a natural death.  unfortunately, that didn't happen and by then it was better to let the thread burn out by it's self. if it hadn't i would have locked it shortly after i did

These forums are already overmoderated. Ease up on the censorship Typh.

We obviously have very different views as to how these forums should be run.

I've been to forums where the moderators will put up with anything. It gets out of control real fast. People expect there to be a double standard - they want rules, but only exceptions to the forementioned for themselves and their friends.

There are times when you may think "god, I wish the moderators would ease up a little bit for this thread," but that would only make their jobs more complicated. If you have to have a different standard of what's allowed for each thread, it can really throw things off. It can also be hard on posters. Many will have the attitude of "well, he went off on a 5 minute rant of bullshit in that other thread, why can't I?" If the moderators are expected to maintain a double standard, things will fall apart real fast.

Personally, I don't think our moderators do a great job. Based upon the topic, you need to decide wether or a thread should be locked before it gets 10-100 posts, otherwise the arguement will just spill over into other threads. Our moderators often seem indecisive.

However, in many cases, no matter what they do, people like me will find each and every little mistake and point it out. While they're not great, I don't think they get enough credit for what they do.

Typhy, I left it open because I try to moderate only when necessary. When I first got the job, I was given a mandate by Mauti to get rid of warez, porn, and overt flamewars. I felt that the topic did not fall into any of these categories, thus I let it run.

I guess Mauti was a little more open-ended with me, which leads me to a conclusion I've felt for a while. . .

Is it time we decided, as moderators, on a set of hard and fast rules we could follow for what constitutes locking, deleting, censoring, and the like?

If we could agree on some real specifics, it would make all our jobs easier.

Just out of a matter of interest, how or rather on what terms are people given moderator status, both on forums and on the Battle league?

thanks in advance ;)
