Hint there are also other search engines than Google. Some are beta but deliver other search results... ;-)

Further what helped us a lot was the ability to search in 2 languages(german and english). However if was a true challenge.

Actually GS's 1st question is incorrect because of the following:
The USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947.
His question should have been worded as when the USAAF..(Still under the US Army) and NOT USAF.

Wrong...U.S. Air Force History includes the predecessor organizations of the Air Force from the creation of the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army Signal Corps on August 1, 1907, through today.  That includes the Army Air Service, Army Air Corps, Army Air Forces, etc.  Take a look at a chart showing Air Force Medal of Honor Recipients sometime...it shows the guys who were awarded it from World War I and World War II under the Air Force chart, not the Army.

The USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947

Prior to 1947, military aviation was the responsibility of the Army, while the Navy maintained a fleet air arm on its fleet of aircraft carriers. The Army branch was known as the U.S. Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Army Air Force.

Dude, I am a military historian, not to mention I served in both the Army and the Air Force.  I think I know what I'm talking about here.  The Air Force Historical Research Agency, based out of Maxwell AFB, AL, has the sole responsibility of keeping up with the history of the U.S. Air Force.  Guess what?  That history goes all the way back to 1907!  Don't know if you know this or not, but there is a holiday called "Air Force Day" which is celebrated on August 1...because that's the day that the Air Force came into existance...it simply went through various names before being resorted under the new Department of Defense on September 18, 1947.

Thus, although it was called Air Force Day, its first celebration was staged by the Army Air Forces and not by the U.S. Air Force.

Oh..and..

Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman "in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation's air strength." August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army.
