Zom@r's R6 Map Pack Review by *DAMN Mauti 5.12.2002

Today I have reviewed Zom@r's R6 Map Pack, a collection of 8 fair, mediocre, horrid, and really excellent rainbow six multiplayer maps. Each map has been individually tested and reviewed.

General Comments

Zom@r has created a singularly bizarre collection of maps, mixing excellent creations far better than the originals with twisted orgies that should never have seen the light of day. The title's are fun and the gameplay interesting. However, there are a few drawbacks that keep even the best maps from being truly wonderful. Perhaps in a later version these may be corrected.

First, none of the maps have modified survival capabilities. This means that if an unsuspecting user tries to play survival on one of the maps, the spawn points will be the same as in the unmodified map. With the many barrels and cars blocking exits, this makes gameplay impossible.

Second, the maps have a large number of completely unnecessary cars and barrels scattered around. This causes some of them to lag far more without contributing to gameplay.

Next, the maps all have only one set of starts. While this can be nice if the starts are especially good, many gamers enjoy playing maps such as hacienda mainly because of their varying starts. Several of the better maps would benefit from different perspectives.

Lastly, hostages in some maps can cause conflicts with skins. If you have certain skins installed, they use hostage skins for player skins, which can be confusing if they happen to be the same.

While there are other map-specific problems, they are in general well-made.

  • Zom@r's Paintball Underground
I was able to interview Zom@r, the creator, about this map, and his own opinion was "This map SUCKS!"Frankly, I must agree. The map is a mod of Athlete's Village's underground. The biggest problem is that it is overloaded with far too many barrels and cars, which causes it to lag on slower machines. However, this also makes movement difficult, and sniping is ruined by easy nading. Hostages scattered around become simply an annoyance after the first game. Perhaps the only redeeming feature about this map is that had it been better done, the general concept of an underground Athlete's Village map is decent, if not exactly original.
    [Individual Rating - 1.5 of 10]

  • Zom@r's Orcha Assault
This map is based on Ship, and is one of the fair maps in this collection. The start points are interesting and make for a few really good battles, but the map is plagued by barrel-lag as described above.
    [Individual Rating - 6.0 of 10]

  • Zom@r's Neighborhood Nightmare
This map is just plain fun. You can tell it was fun to make, and it is fun to play, which is of course the point. The scenario is a face-off between the two buildings in city street large - not an original concept. But the details make up for that. Zom@r has scattered virus capsules from Athlete's Village as barriers, making for a refreshing change from barrels. Although their noise gets irritating after a while, they are in good fun. A few hostages also liven the atmosphere.
    [Individual Rating - 8.0 of 10]

  • Zom@r's Murky River
For those who like to hide in the Road map's river, this map is for you. Finally someone has made a map with this as a start place, although swishing around in the water can be rather tiring. Still, this map has barrels and cars that actually act as blockades or sniping positions instead of cosmetics. It is a highly enjoyable map, and I have no complaints.
    [Individual Rating - 9.0 of 10]

  • Zom@r's Labyrinth
This map is probably the most popular with the GR crowd as any that I've tested. It pits teams in a rush in underground csl to get though a maze of barrel blockades. It provides good variety with nading, rushing, and camping techniques, and is sure to be fun for all. I found one bug, however. When players drop down the stairs into the basement, it is possible to get stuck on some of the barrels down there. Other than that this map is excellent.
    [Individual Rating - 8.5 of 10]

  • Zom@r's India Mishap
This map is by far the best-made, most fun map in the pack. The concept is creative and fairly simple, and appeals to all players...campers, snipers, naders, and rushers. I needn't reveal any more, as this map makes the whole group worth the download.
    [Individual Rating - 10.0 of 10]

  • Zom@r's Distant Shootout and Death from Above
These two maps are essentially the same, with one being awful and the other fair. Both are set in a vast room in Bio Dome and have gold above and blue below. In the first, it is impossible for the two teams to meet, and one afk player or camper quickly ruins the game. In the other, players can meet, but gold typically holds a great advantage being able to snipe from above. Once again too many barrels ruin the map.
    [Individual Rating - 4.0 of 10]

  • Athlete's Village-Top
This mod is very basic, clean, and excellent in every respect. While it doesn't have much originality or pizzazz, it helps make the Athlete's Village map much more fun. It blocks off the basement with only a few barrels, adds no annoyances, and keeps the map fun.
    [Individual Rating - 9.0 of 10]

  • Installer
What installer? A simple installer would be nice, but this mod requires you to manually add the map files to the mission folder of r6...a minus for novice users.

Overall, a good mod and worth the download
Zom@r's R6 Map Pack Overall Rating - 6.0 of 10
